Best Replacement for my RR10 Bomber Servo

Hey guys, new to the RC world, but just jumped in with a RR10 Bomber. I have an hour or so messing around with it and already stripped that stupid plastic gear in the servo.
Where is the best place to shop for new parts online, and do you have any recommendations for an upgrade?

The servo to be replaced is the Tactic TSX45 and I have already purchased an aluminum horn.

I would also love to hear opinions on a high low transmission upgrade....

Thanks in advance for the help,

Jess

IMO you want 400+ oz/in for a 2.2 crawler. Hard to go wrong with a Hitec 7950, you will need a BEC though. IMO a good sensored brushless system eliminates the need for a 2 speed tranny.

Thanks Hahns, I am so new I dont even know what a BEC is?

A BEC is basically a voltage regulator used for directly powering your servo. Most ESCs cannot handle a decent sized servo by themselves.

Search a little, you'll find all sorts of info on using a BEC, it's well traveled territory.

2 other servo options worth a closer look are the new Holmes Hobbies servo and the Xpert 7000. Both offer over 400 oz at higher voltages and, unlike the Hitec 7950, come water resistant (HH)/waterproof (Xpert) out of the box. Hitec announced two new waterproof high torque servos a couple of months ago, but they don't appear to have started shipping yet. Whatever servo you get, x20000 to the BEC. "thumbsup"

Re: Best Replacement for my RR10 Bomber Servo

If you plan on jumping and generally abusing your Bomber, invest in an aluminum cased servo like the Holmes or Savox 1283. Its pretty easy to snap the mounting ears off when the servo is mounted on the axle, I ruined a Hitec in a Wraith with a few bad landings off a moderate sized jump (the servo case was the only casualty too).

Crawling and general trailing aren't nearly as tough on the servo so a plastic cased one will work fine if that is your main use.

I'm running a savox SC-1256 in my bomber and I have no complaints. My brother is running the savox SA-1230sg, and it has a lot of torque. He also had to run an external BEC as well tho.

no matter what servo you run you need a bec.

Thanks for all of these great responses guys. I know I have a lot to learn. I did research the BEC, do you guys recommend the Castle Creations 10? Does anyone sell items on this forum that I can support?

Re: Best Replacement for my RR10 Bomber Servo

Yes. Castle bec is widely the most used bec, on the forum.
Anyone with a blue star under there name, is a vendor on the forum. Support them..

I beat the crap out of my Sexo (wrath based and in the wraith section). I'm running a Hitec 7950, on a Dinky "S" mount..
It takes abuse from all directions! 3500kv on 4s, type of abuse.
Also, there is a vendor on here, that make's a aluminum cap for the 7950..
Check the vendor section and you can find all kinds of goodies! :)

Re: Best Replacement for my RR10 Bomber Servo

Kind of jumping in on this thread since I am in the same boat.

I just picked up a Bomber less than a week ago. Due to work and life, I am only on the first battery charge... maybe 25 mins of run time total on the vehicle. I have only done a little crawling on rocks and some driving over the kids in my house and on the front lawn.

I just had the servo crap out. clicks and sticks when you wiggle it back and forth. Kind of surprised based on what I've done in the 25 mins I've ran the vehicle.

I fully understand that a servo is a wear and tear item; but, the warranty does talk about 10-day on electronics including servo. Has anyone had luck trying to warranty a servo less than 10 days old failed on first battery charge?

Thanks for any help.

I wouldn't even bother. A worthless turd replaced under warranty is still a worthless turd. Unless you just wanna stick it to Axial a bit just out of principal, which I can understand.

I don't think any one with even moderate experience is surprised about the servo failure. If you buy a high quality servo, hitec, holmes etc they are not a wear item. I've run a 7954 for about a year, 50 or so packs through it. and 2 7950's with 15 packs through, zero problems except for an MK gear failure. 5 mins on the bench, 3 just removing the servo from axle, and its fixed. And run for months after, And Hitec was easy to get on the phone and email for the details I was after, they had me sold.

I would try to get a warranty replacement, however, I would not use the replacement as a steering servo. Keep it as a spare, or a shifting servo down the road. Get a quality servo, Aluminum cased is not a priority IMHO, and a Castle BEC. Set the BEC to 7.4 or 8.4 and have a blast. i Know I do.

7950 in a sexo like winnerone, not 4s tho (Damn Winnerone!) But brushless Holmes 3500kv with RC4WD 2 speed. Its too fast sometimes

7954 in crawling wraith, swapped to 7950 for extra torque. will be selling the 7954 in classifieds. Both my 7950's are from RCC classifieds.

Savox 1230. Really impressed with mine

Re: Best Replacement for my RR10 Bomber Servo

Thanks for the input. Looks like I am going to go with a 7954. I've heard enough reviews that I'm hoping steel will suffice over titanium for me.

I am going to see about the 10 day warranty for the servo just the same. Back-up in a pinch or reused down the road for a two speed conversion.

I'm new to this stuff. The only RC I have that is close to real is an HPI Wheely King we got from my wife's work almost a decade ago. I added 4 wheel drive, new gears and a faster motor; but, we never had to replace anything too expensive that broke... which is weird cause I rallied that thing hard. My wife was not stoked when I wanted to drop $ on a bomber. She's not going to be stoked to hear that I'm dropping more $ after driving for 25 mins.

One more question. Can you rebuild the gears in the Hitec servos?

you can buy replacement gearsets for hitech servos yes

I ordered a new MKS HBL 599 for my next Yeti build. .08sec/583 oz/in on 8.2v

Have a Hitec 7954 in my current Yeti build and it's been great. Interested to see if the MKS is that much better.

In my Wraith I have a Hitec 7955TG v2 with a CC BEC at 6.0v and I love it. Just ordered the same setup for my Score Yeti truck. Not as powerful as the 7950 but is plenty for what I need and not as expensive.

The early production D772's were fairly decent @ 7.4v
and acceptable for turning 1.9's (not so great for 2.2's IMO)

But Solar's recent production has cut cost with a redesign in production assembly.
And my recent experience has found current production flaws that fail easily. (primarily the center gear fails engagement)
So my recent multiple D772 purchases were a fail, day one, upon installation :x
Warrantied... but the replacements were equally a failure.

No more D772 purchases or recommendations of utilizing them by me.

X2 on that Savox SA1230SG

I'm purdy pleased with the two I've purchased.
Few servos can match the claimed 500 oz/in @ 6v
Especially considering the lower buy in cost of the Savox 1230.

If money spent were of no concern...
I'd think to go with a Hitec 7950

But after running my 1230 in my 1/6 scale 2.2 rig
I really don't see the reason to spend more.
The Savox 1230 turns my PL TSL 5.8" XL's with authority.

Even put a S 1230 in my 1.9 rig... and it's overkill power wise.
But I personally think that's swell.

depending on budget...

either the Savox SA1230SG or the Hitec HS-7950TH
are respectable choices.

Utilizing an external adjustable BEC, for either, is a must do IMO

Although I must add that my HH's BR/XL's internal BEC
handles the Savox 1230 6v requirement without issue.
Even my FlySky RX holds up easily to the 6v input.

But IMO... by-passing the RX *
and powering the servo directly by ext. BEC/Batt.
is the better/more efficient way.

* HH's "Y" adapter is swell for doing that.

^ that way the ESC's internal BEC can supply the RX
without excessive voltage run thru' it.
