| 1.9 tire decision
What is the best overall 1.9 rc4wd tire? I'll probably be doing as much rock crawling as I can with some trail crawling too. I live in Oregon so things are wet. I'm fairly new to the rc scene so would like some expert suggestions from you guys! I'm looking mostly at rc4wd tires but will entertain other brands. Most likely will be buying some beadlock wheels as well and all this will be going on a vaterra ascender once I can get my hands on one. Thanks in advance. |

1.9 Axial BFGs, 1.9 Rock Beasts and the 1.9 RC4WD x2ss iroks are good too. Do invest in good foams from Crawler innovations though. Having good well supportive foam is an important aspect in performance. |

In order of personal choice, Pro line tsl's Pit bull rock beasts Pit bull growlers Pro line flatirons Rc4wd boggers I run a lot of river beds and trails with mud, granite and roots and the pro line and pit bull tires preform equally well in my opinion. And foams are needed. Otherwise you have a tire that just folds on itself any time there is a little traction. Stock foams are OK, C I foams are the way to go. |

Most of RC4WD's 1.9 tires are in one of two compounds: X3 Soft & Sticky or X2SS Super Soft & Sticky. For the conditions and type of driving you describe, I'd recommend picking one of the X2SS compound tires with deeper lugs. That compound is every bit as sticky as Pit Bull's or Proline's G8 compound. I use the 1.9 Kryptons on my Skeleton Jeep and 1.7 Iroks on a couple of rigs (Ascender and D90) and have been very happy with them. The 1.7 Iroks will mount to 1.9 beadlocks with no problem. The Baja Claws are also terrific, and the new Genius tires (there are two new models) should be excellent, as well. As a reference point, I have a lot of run time on 1.9 Rock Beasts and Proline 1.9 TSL XLs with CI 2-stage foams, both of which are excellent. My suggestion: start by figuring out how tall you want your tires. If you want to stay within Class 1 (4.19" or shorter), Kryptons, 1.7 Iroks, Baja Claw Scale 4.19s, or either Genius tire would all be excellent choices, so you could pick whichever one has looks that you like. If you want to be at or near the Class 2 limit of 4.75", Baja Claw TTCs or 1.9 Iroks would do very well. If you want to be somewhere in the middle, the Rok Lox would be a good choice. Lastly, regardless of which tire you choose, I would definitely recommend picking up some foams to go with. Stock RC4WD foams tend to be very soft, esp. for a heavier rig. Other brand stock foams are often too soft or too firm. The right set of CI foams to fit your tire and rig can make a big difference. Whatever you do, don't run without foams. There's good reason why almost nobody does that. I hope that helps. Have fun with whatever you choose! |

Another word to the wise is make sure whichever tires you choose are compatible with your beadlocks... Some tires will not work with other manufacturer beadlocks (Pro-Line and rc4wd for example) Or if you try to mount Pit Bulls on a set of rc4wd steelies, you'll need the patience of a saint lol.

Yes. Prolines can be a challenge to mount not just on RC4WD wheels. RC4WD now has internal rings specifically for mounting Prolines on their 1.9 and 2.2 wheels, and they're pretty cheap (less than $15 for a set of 4). The product descriptions on the RC4WD site also note wheels that were tested specifically to work with Pit Bulls (e.g., Mickey Thompson Classic Lock 1.9s). It's also possible on other wheels with some patience and the help of a couple of longer screws to get started.

Is air filled an option? That's what I meant by no foams. It would act like a 1:1 tire wouldn't it

It's an option, but not a good one. (I knew that's what you meant .). All of these tires are designed to work with foams, and they work much better that way. GMade came out with a set of 2.2s designed to use air pressure instead, but even they don't work near as well as a good tire with good foams. Foams are just one of several examples where what works well in 1:1s doesn't always work well in RC and vice versa. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

new2rocks knows what he's talking about. I was one of those guys that thought running no foams would be the way to go. I had used Axial beadlocks with no vent holes. Somewhat ok in the summertime, as long as it was hot enough, but temperature changes , and cooler weather sucked. I now run 2 stage foams in all my trucks.

IMO the two top 1.9 tires are the VooDoo KLR and the Pit Bull Rock Beasts nothing else works as hard for me as those two.

KLR's are a big tire but no doubt top shelf. If you go big tire I would do the KLR or the Growler. The growlers are hard to beat in any terrain. I also dig the Madbeast for a tall skinny tire!

You should definitely use foams! Quote:
- ProLine TSL tires are amazing all around tires. - Pitbull Growlers and Rock Beasts are also amazing. The Growler is an amazing tires on rocks, but it can struggle in loose dirt and mud where tight tread spacing hurts. - Voodoo KLRs appear to be great tires. I have a set in Silver just waiting to be run. The tread is extremely aggressive. RC4WD tires in X2 SS compound are not bad, but in my experience they wear faster than other brands so that's why I don't buy them as often anymore.
