Default Battery Choice

Hi All,

Waiting on my Axial Scx10 to get here. My question pertains to batteries. I assume the reason to go to lipo batteries is to increase run-time correct? I do understand when moving up to 2s and then 3s batteries will make brushless motors crank faster but since trail/crawling is done at a slower pace.

LiPo batteries have better capacity to weight ratio, no memory effect, faster charging and generally longer life. They do need to be cared for, not over-discharged and stored at proper voltage but other than that they are far superior to NiMH. As far as 2s/3s is concerned, I would recommend starting with 2s until you get the hang of it and then go to 3s if you feel the need for speed. You can always gear down but you can only gear up so far until your motor is working too hard.

Thank You. I did know a bit about the batteries but the detailed info you gave me has me thinking. For my Trail Truck I will probably order Lipo 2s's for it. I have a brushless shortcourse that I might make a speed demon.

I'm a fan of the inexpensive turnigy lipo batteries. You can use 3s with brushed motors as well, and brushed are preferred for trailing with mud and water.

I usually get the HK Zippy batteries. There cheap, get 3 or 4 and you can charge faster than you can discharge them

Turnigy... I'm switching to all 3s Turnigy batteries. They're smaller so I can mount them in different places up front and I can move the rest of the electronics up front too. Just my 2 cents

I run Venom #1577 , 2100mah, 20c, 3s. Venom has unbeatable customer service and much better warranty then Turnigy......period. I used to use the Turnigy packs too. then after I had a few go bad in a very short period of time and customer service is....well....pretty much non existent with HK. Been running the Venom packs for a couple years now, in fact, the same packs, haven't had 1 go bad on me yet and I have 6 of them.

What's your runtime on those packs and what weight is your rig and driving style? I'm going from brushed to brushless and 2s to 3s on my crawlers and am looking for new batteries.

No idea what the weight is on my rig, it's mostly stock, but the Ascender is kinda heavy. I get 2 to 2-1/2 hours of run time out of the packs.

As far as discharge rate, for a crawler you don't "need" 50c packs. 20 to 25c has been just fine.

I am running the Venom 2c packs, but I like how small the Turnigy packs look but I have heard about issues with them from others.

Venom has outstanding lifetime warranties.

The Venom and Turnigy 3s packs are the same size. I ran Turnigy before, had 1 puff up after a few uses though. None of my Venom packs have puffed yet.

I use Pulse 2250 mah 3s 35c - I like that it's small and light weight. Doesn't run as long as a 5000 but runs long enough for me

Here's another vote for Venom batteries and their chargers. I've dealt with their customer service before too and it was also top notch.

What electronics are you running will determine what lipos you should run. Like if your esc will even run 3s. I run the hobby King zippy 2200 3s lipos with about 2 hrs of run time
