Default Comp Crawling: Things you wish you knew..

Hey guys,
My first comp crawler comes in the mail on Monday and I'm excited. Also, I'm diving head first into the hobby so I'd just like to ask some people, what would you have like to know when you started that you had to learn? Just trying to prepare myself for what's to come and have some conversations through this long weekend(for me, cause the waiting. its unbearable. ).

That's a loaded question... patience is key when it comes to comp crawling... and spend the money on quality parts so you spend it once.
what rig did you pick up?

Congratulations on your first crawler.
I would have liked to know more about shock and suspension setup. Then how to pick a good line to make it over and through obstacles. Learning how to drive your rig is the most fun and If you run with a good group they will share their information and help you drive better.

I have an XR10 coming my way. I've always driven cars and buggies, but crawling just sunk it's hook deep and I can't wait to get into it. Seems like it's pretty active in my area so I'm excited to meet up and see how the comps are.

See, thats one thing I wanted to make a thread for. Maybe I can use this one.. I want a quick run down on the abbreviations for this damn hobby. I'm constantly reading and its all just TVP this, and Chub that. I learned what Chubs are, but now, LCG, no idea. Any help?

Money cannot replace talent, but it accentuates it well.

Ah, OK. And I see people piling all the electronics in the front. Is that the new standard? Most of the weight in the front?

it's all preference, depending on your electronics where you want them or where they fit...
I run my esc's and bec on my chassis skid. I run my battery behind front axle/motor.

I'm sure you reading through the XR10 section a lot of great info and build pictures in there

Cool, thanks. Will do. Any recommendations on batteries? The guy I bought it from is sending me one he says is on its last leg but I can use it as reference of what to buy. I also need a lipo charger so I was thinking Venom has some good combos on Amazon

Most of us run small batteries in the 450/500mah range. Here are a few I found to be good choices

GENS ACE 450mAh 25C 11.1V lipo battery pack

Turnigy nano-tech 450mAh 3S 65C Lipo (E-flite Compatible Blade 180CFX EFLB4503SJ30)

GForce 50C 500mah 3S 11.1V LiPO | Value Hobby

On chargers I cant be much help. I have only had a Hyperion , but I cant complain. been going strong for 9 years

Learn how to drive the truck first. Then learn how to drive it again. Then drive it a lot more.
Good driving beats expensive parts everyday.

Hah, I can't wait to just start driving it. First time in a while I'm impatient for the weekend to be over.

Thanks for the selection, Stuck. Looks like most of those small batteries come with JST connectors. Do I have to strip and solder my own connectors to it?

You can specify whatever connector you want when ordering from hobbyking.com. I run a dc-6 charger off of a power supply but they have a ac-6 that's still reasonably priced that can charge any type of battery off of 110 volt.

Thunder AC6 Smart LiPo Balance Charger/Discharger w/ AC Adapter for 1-6 Lipo/ 1-15 Nimh + USB to PC Software
