| Molybdenum grease, good or bad?
Hey everyone, new to the forums and rc crawling. I was wondering if anyone has ever used molybdenum grease (moly) for their gears when waterproofing an rc crawler. I use moly all the time when I work on dirt bikes, motorcycles and bicycles, and I love the stuff. I just don't know if it would be safe or good to use on an rc car. I don't plan to put it by any electronics just around gears to keep them from rusting and keeping water out.

Tamiya, Schumacher, etc sell molybdenum grease for use on RC cars. So, yes, it is safe. |

Just make sure it doesn't contain petroleum, as that will mess up your plastics. Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk |

Cool cool, I'll have to check if it has petroleum in it. How does petroleum affect the plastic? Does it make it soft, eat through it?

I use the stuff on my RC projects. I couldn't find any scientific articles on molybdenum disulphide being incompatible with plastic; on the wiki page, it says it can be mixed with plastic. I don't expect it to 'waterproof' my rc cars, as that is more about 'ingress protection', where you want to seal out the water where it would get in through the seams and axle openings, for example. If you have water inside of your gearbox, this grease won't help for long on those metal gears and bearings. |

So then wouldn't the best way be to add a little moly grease then use silicon around all the cracks?

I know there is a waterproofing thread on here before this gets deep into waterproofing. Thank you for your responses, more are welcome if you have more to add, I'm all ears.

I use Fluid Film or Corrosion-x on every exposed bit of metal on my axial kit to keep the rust in check. You can try conformal coatings to protect the electronics, but I simply picked my components carefully, with factory "waterproofed" servos, esc, motor, and receiver. And then I simply stay to splashing through the water, and never purposefully submerging it. And when components fail, as they eventually do, you replace it with something better. | |

Moly grease will work on anything, gears love it. I've always used it from calipers to transmissions. Hang up and Drive |
