Are they worth the $200 price tag?

No, especially since you can't use either component with other brands. Get a Holmes Hobbies/Castle Creations setup and don't look back...

Ended up going with a hobbywing 1080 and a rc4wd 35 turn motor.

Hobbywing 1080 and most brushed motors is a good combo

I just swapped my 1080 and Yeah Racing Hackmoto 13t 5 slot, to an AXE 2300kv

Under no load, on the flat start up smoothness and slow speed control is about the same. But power, torque and top end the brushless Hobbywing is better by quite a bit

Ummm...

I used the Forum search feature, not Google search - and I came up with a 24-page thread with 469 posts on the HobbyWing Axe.

I was trying to be helpful.

And, since I did that for you, all you had to do was click on the underlined hyperlink entitled "Hobbywing Xerun AXE" and read.

But, whatever...

Your link worked for me, thanks durok! I was debatin on whether to go with the HW axe or the castle mamba x with about a 2600kv sensored motor for my winter build. Definanlty goina go for the mamba x

I do appreciate it tons man. When I use the little search at the top right I get the topic I’m looking for, but when I click it I leave the page and go to google pages. I didn’t think to click your link. The links I did find on the 1080 were from 2016 , thinking that newer versions were out I wanted updated opinions.

You need to click carefully to search the forum rather than Google - see the below image - this is what happens when you click on the word "Search" in-between "New Posts" and "Quick Links" above the Google Custom Search window (which you should ignore for searching in this forum):

My kid and I have been RC crawling for quite a while and after his brand new 1080 caught fire between comp courses, I bought him an AXE system and we both liked it so much that I bought one for my C2 comp rig.

I have a mamba x/ slate combo in my Wraith, a mamba micro x/ outrunner combo in my Marlin TF2 C1 comp rig, and a micro x/ hobbywing juststock 25.5T in not other C2 and the AXE is the best crawling combo. The mamba x/ slate has more punch and top end, but for my style of slow crawling, I love the AXE.

The 200% drag brake is epic and the low speed control is awesome.

I have to agree!
With a 9 tooth pinion I can make a snail look rapid!
Have 6 AXE systems installed across the various rigs.
Testing the 550 can currently, just a bummer the 11 pinion is the smallest I can go.

I'm running an axe system in a 9.5lb rig and couldn't be happier with it. Plenty of low end control, but when I need some power its there.

I found an axe 3300 550 a few weeks ago for $150 so I got it in my wraith now and swapped out my 1080 to my sons trx4 and I have to say I like it. When I get a rig I want to set up for comp style crawling I’ll most likely go with a basher/bouncer set it in the wraith. Then put the axe in the comp rig.

I typically run Holmes motors in my rigs with a combination of different ESC's - (These include both brushed and brushless systems). However, several features of the AXE system piqued my interest while I was building my Capra over the Winter. I went ahead and picked up the 540 / 2300kv system (189.00), and installed it in the Capra. I've got enough packs and trigger time on it now where I feel I can weigh in on any debate about it.

The GOOD:

Super quiet running system
Great start up
Smooth power delivery
Plenty of wheel-speed (3s)
Plenty of torque

The BAD - (Not so much bad as quirky):

The system can be fickle about updates
Following updates, it seems you often have to go through the re-binding process

Overall, I've been very pleased with this system in my Capra. Start up and low speed creep is right on par with my Mamba X / 1800kv Revolver system, and as mentioned, MUCH QUIETER. I also feel the roughly $200 or so for the system is right in line with other systems from Castle, HH, TEKIN, etc. The one thing I have noticed is that for some reason, people who do not own and have never run this system always seem to want to weigh in. I'm not sure what that's all about, but I'd take any opinion from that perspective with a grain of salt.

I have an Axe setup for my SC10ii that I have been building for the last week. The one thing I noticed so far is that the cooling fan doesn’t plug into the Esc for power. So know I have to split a connection so i can use all 4 of my channels in the rx. I’m setting up hi/low shift, and dig.
