| Dual motor & ESC upgrade
As part of the learning process, I have a WLToys 10428-D 1/10 "crawler". While a bit of a beast in full speed mode, it's hard to control for crawling. In low speed mode, it's gutless. This car has dual 280 size motors. I'd like to replace these in order to get more torque to allow crawling at lower speeds. I've looked at modifying it with an RC4WD Outcry ESC and dual 540 motors. Will this get me the low speed torque I need or should I be looking at gearing instead of motor upgrades? |

When you say it's gutless in Lo, do you mean it lacks torque or wheel speed? If you need more torque you need to upgrade to bigger motors. If more wheel speed, change your gearing. At least I think that's right. Sent from my ONEPLUS A6013 using Tapatalk |

Before buying anything, especially motors, get something & measure that a motor 36mm in diameter & just over 50mm long will actually fit

If it is running 280 motors, the the biggest motors you'll be able to put in without major modification are 380 motors. Recommend putting in mini crawler motors, like those for this guy: https://www.horizonhobby.com/1-18-4w...--p-ecx01015t1 |

You could try a smaller pinion gear. But this is toy grade. Meant to be fun till it breaks then trash. Not terrible for a first car but don't spend more money on it. Sent from my SM-N950U using Tapatalk |

Yeah Voodoobrew may be right. I started off with a sort of toy grade RC (sorry Tamiya fans) the CC01, modded the hell out of if. In hindsight I should have moved on to a better platform instead of throwing more $ down the drain. Its often hard to make something with such poor performance any better with mods, or enough to even warrant it. A pinion swap is likely the best, least complex and least expensive option. Besides which, once you get those more powerful 540 motors in there chances are the plastic drive gears will fail in the 1st 5 minutes anyway. | |
