The scale construction and semi guys may know of something, but I doubt it. They'll probably suggest a micro, linear actuator.

A micro linear actuator should address the heating issue as they are designed to hold a position anywhere in their travel (sorry, got my robotics head on), finding one of the size required could be an issue, I haven't seen any really small ones but then again I haven't had a robotics project that requires one.
