First Build - Capra

Hello all,

I am in the process of ordering parts for a Capra build and am looking for suggestions/advice for a few items I'm not experienced with:

1) Motor/ESC - I am brand new to crawling and will initially approach this as a hobbyist who is learning. I will get it wet from time to time and may end up occasionally crawling in snow. I am not sure if I should get brushed vs brushless and am uncertain about the correct number of turns

2) Steering servo - I don't even know where to begin with this

3) 2S vs 3S - Same, I don't know enough to understand the benefits/drawbacks

Thank you in advance!

Welcome to the site!

Do you want to crawl or go fast? We need to know more about your intentions with the Capra. Also, what's your budget?

This will be a crawling vehicle. The only time I'd like a little speed is when I'm driving around in the yard with my daughter, but that isn't a priority at all.

Edited to add budget: I don't even know where to begin, but I am usually a middle to upper budget kind of guy. I just don't know what that equates to in RC components yet

Welcome to the forum Matt! Excellent choice for your first rig too. Like Jato said, it would help to know your primary focus with the rig and what you’re ballpark budget is. There can be a huge swing in Motor/ESC combos and servos price wise. Having said that, you don’t have to break the bank to get a quality set up.

Thank you! I'm really excited about the project. I was going to wait until the SCX10 iii comes out, but I am not that patient. Plus I want to take advantage of all the newfound spare time I have and start building it ASAP.

This will be a crawling rig for sure. I definitely like the idea of a quality setup that doesn't break the bank. I would like it to be a capable, but also very reliable vehicle. I don't want to get frustrated by downtime if possible. I am sure that happens, but I don't want it to be because I bought something too "cheap".

For focusing on crawling here's what I'd recommend with estimated price.

Motor: Holmes Hobbies 540 CrawlMaster 16T or Reedy Radon 16T if you can't find the CrawlMaster in stock. $20
ESC: HobbyWing 1080 ESC - $40
Steering servo: Here's where you want to spend money IMO. Savox 1230 or 1231 is a good midrange, but it can be noisy. You could also checkout the budget servo thread. Some guys are loving the $20-$30 servos. Thread is here: http://www.rccrawler.com/forum/elect...otness-54.html
3S: It offers more power density (longer run times at lighter weight) and you can gear down to control the speed, but still get more punch from the 3S battery. The Capra is VERY picky with batteries because only a small bunch fit the stock, unmodified location at this point. See this thread for battery recommendations: http://www.rccrawler.com/forum/axial...ry-thread.html

You may also want to grab a smaller pinion gear for the Capra. It's a pretty fast rig.

Re: First Build - Capra

Thank you! I am building all of this out on AMAIN as we speak. I am going to send the list to my local hobby store to see if they have everything in stock. I know right now the 1080 ESC appears to be out of stock on a couple of sites.

In regards to gearing down, what would that look like? Do I need to buy something additional to make that happen?

Also, what kind of charger do you suggest? I just saw an online review on this one:

https://www.amazon.com/Dual-Lipo-Cha...QSHRB55E002JN8

Oh, and in regards to radios, do I need to get anything specific?

Welcome to the "crawling club". You're going to love the Capra. It was my first crawler (I now have 4, in various stages of being built), and I've been enjoying it so much, I just finished building a second Capra (as a Class 3 comp rig). Enjoy.....

I usually get my 1080's from RPP (out of stock), eBay, or directly from the HobbyWing distributor here (currently in stock and they typically ship quickly): https://www.hobbywingdirect.com/prod...nt=26223842568

For chargers, go with a reputable brand. You can get a Hitec for about the same price as that no-name brand: https://www.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?I=LXGWYX&P=SM
or even Venom Pro Duo: https://www.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?I=LXFTFV&P=ML

Pinion size is personal. You can always start with stock and see if you like it. I believe my Capra still has the stock pinion.

Re: First Build - Capra

Stock pinion in the Capra makes it way too fast for Crawling imho. I went with an 11T, which is the smallest the Capra will accept without doing some clearance work / mods. I feel that even the 11T is a bit fast though. The brushed spec Jato provided above is a super solid spec that a good number of us run on various rigs and it should be perfect for your intended use. Plus, given the very limited real estate available for electronics in the Capra, the 1080's smallish form factor will be welcome during your build. I ended up going with the HobbyWing AXE brushless system in my build. The RPM matching function in the system was a bit weird to drive at first, but the more trigger time I get with it, the more I seem to be liking it. If I were to try another brushless system in the Capra, I think I would go with a Castle Mamba X (Large ESC, but people have fit them) and a Holmes Hobbies 1800kv Revolver. (Outrunner motor). I run this system on 4S in my TRX4 and it is by far my favorite combination among all my rigs. Fantastic start up and low speed creep, gobs of torque and plenty of wheel speed and pop when needed.

Re: First Build - Capra

On my first Capra, which uses the stock transmission (my other Caps uses an AX10 3-gear trans), I'm running a 9T pinion on a Castle Mamba X w/ Castle 'Slate' 2080kV motor, with 3S. Work this config, it's super-slow when it needs to be "slow", and fast enough (but not too fast) when it needs to be "farts".

The only reason I'm about to run smaller than 11T is because I replaced the stock plastic transmission housing with the Vitavon Racing machined aluminum transmission housing. As others have pointed out, work the stock trans housing, the smallest pinon you can use is an 11T.
