| How often should you replace grease in diffs and transmission?
As the title suggests, how often should you replace the grease in your differentials and transmission?

Unless you have a problem, it should be good to go. The only time I change out the grease is when I have a reason to go into one of those components for maintenance, upgrades or rebuilds. Whenever I do go in, I clean everything up, getting the old grease off, inspect for damage or wear, and put new grease in, easy-peasy. Depending on the application I will use AE Black Grease (coats well and comes off easy), or for RCs that might see more water, marine grease (coats well, does not come off easy). With that, if you have an RTR, it is not a bad idea to crack open the transmission and differential cases to check the grease, and to make sure some was actually applied. |

^ He's right on. I'll add, if water gets in and makes it all milky, I'll change it out, too. I use marine grease now, so I'm good for a while. |

I find the input and output shaft bearings will be worn and slightly notchy before the grease breaks down. Playing submarine is death to bearings and grease. Those who stay dry may go years without opening up the trans, while those of us who can't resist sand, mud, water may need to open it up a couple times a year for a good cleaning and fresh bearings and grease.

I would say every 6 months to a year for maintenance and checking for wear, depending on how much you run it. Also if you like to run in mud and water, I would tear it down after every run or two and run marine grease.

I generally run until something needs work fixed. Have bearings on hand. I usually buy good bearings, remove a seal, pack them with grease, and then put the seal back on just prior to installing/replacing the stock bearings. A Greased Bearing cant get water inside if you've properly greased it as all areas are full of grease or bearing parts. Then I don't mess when them until the bearing is shot. I went 2 years on my HPI Baja 5B without needing to change a bearing, and that was with weekly use. Good Grease, and a good grease job, and issues are far less likely to occur, at leas where bearings are concerned unless they are seeing insane rpms. Unless I am running Ceramic Bearings. With Ceramics, I remove a seal, take break cleaner and spray them out to clean them as much as possible, then put the seal back on. So with Ceramics, they'll get a maintenance very often. So I don't use them much because I'm a lazy bastard. |

How much grease do you put on the gears? Light coating or pack it in? I bought a used TRX4. I discovered the 2-speed trans was rusted out bad. So I got all the parts and will rebuild it. Just normal grease in trans and save the thicker stickier stuff for diffs? My rock limited slip spins too much. So Instead of locking it, I can tune it better with the super sticky stuff right? |
