Default Your all time favorite kit build

My dad saw me build my RR10 bomber and thought it's be cool to build something. He found a cool kit with a crazy transmission and planetary gears but apparently it's not available. He's not into the electronics and probably won;'t even run it. He's just looking for a cool project maybe that will show some of the mechanics used in things like differentials, and transmissions.

Any specific recommendations regarding kits that were your favorite to build or that you'd want to build if you could?

I would say any of the Losi or Axial kits would be good. Personally, I have always been a fan of the Losi stuff.

My all this me favorite rc kit is the tamiya grasshopper all tamiya kits are like building a model to a point
Also rc4wd kits sound like good shelf queens with lots of scale details

Oh... I forgot to add and the prior post reminded me. My all time favorite was kit to build was a Tamiya Super Champ. I agree with the prior poster in that the were like assembling a model. The Super Champ was unique for the time with many full metal components. I wish I still had that car.

Of all of the kits I have put together, the most satisfying kit was my King Hauler.

The scx10 ii kit is pretty nice, but Tamiya kits are always fun, too.
My favorite might be my little old CC-01 MU.

I've never had one, but something about the Kyosho Beetle intrigues me. Sure, the Tamiya Sand Scorcher is more accurate, I'm just drawn to the Kyosho. It's probably the beam front end and VW IRS
that just makes it neat to look at and different from every other a-arm buggy out there. The reproduction has many cast aluminum parts that the original didn't have.

One of my favorites to build was the leaf sprung Gmade Sawback. Not the best performer by a long shot, and includes butter soft philips hardware, but it's got more character than any of my other cars.

Sounds like your dad may have been looking at the MST CFX? I used the planetary transmission and divorced transfer case from that in my Sawback. Amain blew those kits out cheap a year or so ago and I know a few members here bought multiple kits, you might try placing a wanted ad here, you may be able to track down one that's new-in-box.

The current scx10.3 has a realistic drivetrain layout with lots of mechanical doodads like dig, 2 speed, portal axles, etc. If it's the mechanics of things that interest him, that may be a good option. The TRX4 kit may fit the bill even better just because it has selectable locking differentials and the kit includes (crappy) electronics.

Then there's the SSD Trail King, more scale accurate with a familiar to fullsize drivetrain, yet a better performer than most of the other scale platforms. A good middle ground of performance and looking good on the shelf.

My all-time favourite kit to build was my SSD Trail King, but it sounds like your dad needs a King Hauler and a trailer or two.

The KH is a great build and it makes a great shelf queen. As a bonus, you can keep building more trailers for it so the build isn't done when the cab is built..

If it's not going to be a runner per-se and no budget listed, a Bruiser would be a great build. One of the most complex transmissions I've ever built. Or an Tamiya Hilux (Yota, Tundra, and F350) - all have 3 speed transmissions and lockable diffs.

All with hard bodies and the best directions in the business.

Even a Tamiya CR01...doesn't perform all that great which is moot, but is a very complicated and satisfying build. (with a planetary transmission I might add, and a very unique suspension)

Any of the above would scratch that build itch and look fantastic on a shelf.

Wow, some great suggestions. That Hauler kit looks awesome! I'll pass it on to my dad and see what he ends up with .

Totally agree. I've built two semis the King Hauler and the Cascadia. Well designed, detailed and a pleasure to build. With electronics and everything needed, this is not a low budget build.

Gen one Tamiya Blackfoot. Can’t get it anymore but great kit for the time with great instructions. Had a lot of fun with that truck and it got me into a lifelong passion for all things RC.

That King Hauler looks like it would be awesome. Well, I think my dad opted to backorder the MST JP1. So, we'll see how that goes. Thanks for the input. Now I'm considering a King hauler .

Tamiya TA03F Audi A4 STW touring car was my first lit i built. To this day my fav. I like all kits though and almost enjoy building them more than driving.

Agreed on King Hauler for a show piece. I would do that all day. You can do so much with it: day cab, bone stock, stretched large car, weathered beater...possibilities are endless. Personally I'd do a day cab with stretched frame, polished deck plate, big stacks, custom rear fenders, and a boatload of chicken lights. Then scratch build a lowboy drop deck and look for a tractor to set on it. Man I just talked myself into wanting one.

No idea what the budget is but the Capo JK Max kits are pretty wild. I’ve always been fascinated by those.

I was going to say the TRX4, it's pretty complex, portals, 2 speed, locking diffs and all, but I'ts expensive for a shelf queen.

Looking at the other posts, a King Hauler is probably what your dad's looking for, with proper paining, you can make it look like a piece of art, and it'll make a great desk or shelf piece.

I enjoyed building the cross rc hc6. It doesn't perform very well but I love taking it out on trail runs, looks really good creeping along.
