Default First 1/10 Crawler

So I ha e the SCX24 now and I love it! Been doing a lot of upgrades and changes to it.

I am now looking at purchasing a larger scale crawler for the first time. I want an all around rig, crawling and trail driving. I am not looking for scale realism. I appreciate those that do, but it's not really for me. That being said, I am looking at 4 options.

Axial Capra
Axial Wraith Spawn
Traxxas TRX4 Sport Kit
Traxxas TRX4 Kit

I currently have all Traxxas stuff due to it being easier running their chargers and their batteries. If I go Axial, I'll simply cut the battery connector on the ESC and solder on a Traxxas one, with the exception of the Capra due to the battery tray size. (Unless there is a battery tray mod to allow a longer battery?)

I am really leaning towards the Capra, but don't want to purchase new batteries and a charger. Plus it is the most expensive of the group.

I know the difference between the TRX4 Sport and TRX4 already, so with my use, the TRX4 would prolly make more sense over the Sport.

So with all that being said what are yalls recommendations?

I think those are 4 great choices. Go with the one that has the upgrades you want, or a kit to make your own choices.
I recently bought my first 1/10 trail crawler. I went with the Redcat Gen8 V2; the price, upgrades, and capability sold me.

I'd go with the Capra or TRX4 Sport.

The Capra is a great RC, I haven't driven mine as much as I have wanted to, but the wheel time I have had on it has been enjoyable. It is very stable, a great crawler, and fairly easy to set up. The one negative thing I can say about it is that the battery tray requires a shorty pack, and can be a pain to get in and out.

All of the TRX rigs I own I have enjoyed, they are fun to drive, easy to work on, and repair/upgrade parts are plentiful. Where the Capra is more of a pure crawler, the TRXs are more of a do-all, that can be configured to whatever you want.

i cant speak for any of the ones on your list other than the trx4 sport ... thats what i got for my first crawler and believe me it wont stop there ... i would definetely recommend it, is a great kit and is very capable ... there is lots of aftermarket support and easy to work on. As for the batteries ... I also have the traxxas charger which is great and easy to use ... and at the beginning of my Rc adventure I only acquired a couple of traxxas batteries ... after other Rigs started to fill in the garage ... believe me we all go down the rabbit hole. ( you will have more than one crawler) =) ... I needed more batteries to be able to cycle them ... however buying traxxas batteries can get pricy. Since them i have picked 2s and 3s batteries from other brans ....( POVWAY, Gens Ace , Common sense) and I have been able to charge them all with the OG traxxas charger ... make sure you order the lipos with the traxxas plug or at least get them with the xt60 style and use the common sense rc xt60 to traxxas adapter.

I am very happy with the spawn. For me the price was right compared to some of the other models out there.

Have now run the machine up against some of the other scale models and this things performs just as good if not better.

As with any RTR there will need to be upgrades made from the plastic components to the metal. So that wasn't much of concern for me as there are tons of upgrade capabilities.

The only thing I didn't like was how the body was mounted, but that was a quick $6 fix using the traxxas battery mount.

I haven't started hacking the body or the cage yet so I wasn't prepared to eliminate this issue in its entirety.

Definitely try Capra! Many around here are switching to Capra.

I have an older Wraith 2.2, it is sort of ok at crawling, sort of ok at trailing and sort of good at bashing. Not really it sort of sucks at all of them.

People like the Capra but they don't seem to do as well at crawling (comping anyway) BUT the ones I have seen comp are basically stock and they are going up against dedicated comp rigs so probably not a far comparison. The biggest issue seems to be their width. If you don't comp width may not be an issue any way.

I really like my "TRX4" much of it is not TRX4 any more other than the driveline. BUT I use the selectable lockers allot in comping and crawling and the 2 speed is nice on the trail.

My recommendation is a TRX4 with selectable lockers if you want more scale which you said you didn't so maybe then I would suggest the Capra.

As far as battery connection? If you don't want to solder you can get adapters.

Yeah, I have been leaning towards the TRX4. Seems there is a lot more aftermarket support, plus their HQ is a 45 minute drive from my house. Thanks everyone for the input!
