Default First crawler - speed altering (motor, pinion, gear)

Hello everyone,

finally got our first crawler, its even more fun than we expected and we expected a ton of fun! Literally could not stop crawling the first expedition, went for like 6 hours close the midnight, awesome!

Anyways, so we have the first RGT ex86120v2. Im really loving what this thing is able to do considering the price.
I think it has great speed control but Id still like to try to experiment with, basically making it go slower so I can throttle more precisely at lowest speed while sacrificing top speed.

As I see it after some research there are several options. What seems best for me is to simply change to motor for higher turn one. Id would also change from 540 to 550 to get more torque.currently running stock 540 20T Id like to try something like 550 35T. Will this result in what am I asking or is it more complicated? Are there any downsides to this solutions?

Thank you very much for your time, answers and pointing me on right track.

Radek from Prague

going to a 550 can might be hard on parts as well as the extra weight of the motor
there not the most durable rig on the market
puting to much power though that rig will likely send you down the upgrade rabit hole

Thank you for your reply, ferp.
Im more into making the motor run slower, how is that gonna be hard on the rig?
But lets say I just keep 540 but use a higher T slower motor.
Will that just make my rig go slower and have more precise control at low speeds?

How is that different from changing the gearing?

Hope you understand, Im looking for very basic info to understand the situation.

Thank you!

Cheapest easiest way to improve the low end is to put the smallest motor pinion you can on it.

the increse in torque of the 550 motor can kill cheap plastic gears ive also had gear housings crack in half from to much torque if the truck gets bound up the wheel will stop but the motor will still turn

also 550 can motors are heavyer and thats harder on parts to

a 540 can motor dosent make as much torque it usualy stalls before it eats something

a pinnion change is a good place to start and usualy gearing down dosent cauze alot of heat issues
the turn of the motor is a personal preferance basicly it comes down to the what you want brushed motors have a small range of were there happy the waight of the vehicle the size of the tires is it a hardbody or lexan what axles your running and the gears inside them what tranny are you running are all big factors
i would say a high turn motor geared fast is eazyer on parts but harder on the motor and a fazter motor geared down whould be eazyer on the motor and harder on parts
