Default complete newb

So im interested in getting into a crawler. Never done RC before, but would like to build one. I don't care about scale...want to build something capable and wanting a tube buggy type, not a body. was looking at starting with a cabra and modding it....think I want 4wheel steer, not too concerned about dig....so what else do I need to know? Is there a parts list of what I need somewhere? Am I looking in the complete wrong direction?

Thanks

Jake

I think you should buy a Capra RTR and drive it.

I agree, building is fun and well worth it, but I think there is a lot of value in starting with an rtr 4ws Capra and learning from it.

There’s no reason why you can’t completely disassemble it, regrease, or add a stainless hardware kit from team knk, and get the same experience as building a kit.

Having built many RC kits (including a Capra) over 3+ decades I’m not certain that I would suggest the kit form Capra for someone’s first build. Not saying someone new to the hobby couldn’t do it, but it certainly could frustrate the hell out of them. Buy something ready to run (like the new 4ws Capra) and run it. Plenty of time later to mod it, rebuild it, etc. Definitely keep your first rig simple.

Need is hard to define when it comes to a hobby haha.

I don’t have anything with 4ws, and I enjoy my rigs just fine. But it certainly will add another level of performance.

As a first crawler? No... I definitely wouldn't worry about rear-steer this early in the game. You can always add that feature in the future but I believe you'd be better off to save the extra money and use that for other potential aesthetic and performance mods that will personalize your rig and boost the capability of it... as well as spending some money on quality tools that will make repairs and mods go smoothly. Add rear steer ( or not) down the road after you've gotten some experience with driving it a while.

I’d say, if a particular vehicle sparks your interest… go for that one. You’re more likely to dig in and learn if your interested

As new as you are to RC crawling, you sound a bit like most of us. Or at least how we are when we start this hobby;

Spend some money on something that looks fun, and you'll start figuring the rest out from there.

Seems like you'll be fine with the Capra. If dig and / or 4WS isn't for you, you'll adjust.

The way to get the best performance from any model is to buy and ship me a new model, for every model you buy yourself. Trust me. It's what most forum members do.

I agree, especially the last part.
