Hey gang first off, Im sorta new to RC's and crawlin. I have a Nylint but after coming here and lurking, doing research, watching build threads, looking at TONS of pics and videos, I'm sort of at a dead end as what I should build as my first real crawler. Now Im a senior in college (graduating in May!) so as always, money is a big factor. Im looking for something that I can enjoy putting together, learn a lot about in the process, and get out on the rocks. I have been looking at the Clod, TLT, and AX-10 based rigs for a while now. I know this will not be my only RC that I build for crawlin so I don't need a $1000 comp rig with all of the bells and whistles if you get what Im saying. Something that I can learn how to drive, tune, tweak, and do some mods to make it better and have fun with it! Im leaning towards an AX-10 mainly because after viewing the 'Live build thread' Im sold on having mostly everything in one box! Plus the price isn't that bad either! Now I know that I will most likely be ordering some of the better parts for it when I order the AX-10 but nothing too major right away. I want to go from stock, learn what works and what doesn't, and go from there! So what do you guys think? Would the AX-10 be a good base for a crawler and a semi new driver? Thanks for any and all of your help!

The ax10 is a perfect kit for a beginner on the rocks. You can mod it so much to make "your own". Im a newb at rc crawling but not to the hobby, so that helped a bit. But its deffinately the number one choice for new crawlers.

The ax-10 scorpian would be a great project truck. Dont overlook the wheely king though. Its a great truck. Keep in mind the price, the axial is $250 as a kit but the wheely king is $200 as a rtr. But the axial is a crawler out of the box.

Thanks for the replies!! Keep them coming! Im still leaning towards the AX-10 as of right now for a starter rig that I can have a lot of fun with! Any others to consider other than the ones I have listed in my original post?

Remember that 250 for the ax10 is only for the truck itself. You will need a radio, motor, esc, and servo to make it go which will tack on another 150 or so.

Yes I did take that into account when looking around at all of the possibilities! Thank you for the heads up tho! I do appreciate it! If I was a total nOOb, I would have ordered it and been like "Where's the rest of it?" I was reading the AX-10 article on the homepage here and was going to go that route since it seems to perform quite well with some very minor mods!

I bought the ax10 with the intent to get deeper into crawling and thats exactly what it has done for me. With just minor adjustments its crawling like i wouldnt belive. The little mods that you can do with the stock parts really will make a differnce. The only bad thing is that you do have to buy the electronics. But i didnt mind, becuz i wanted strong electronics, plus i had some extras laying around my shop. Hope it all works out for ya!

Thanks! I hope it works out as well! Im going to see how the funds are after the holidays and after buying books for my last semester in college (woo hoo!) and I might get my first ever build under way! Then I will have it for hopefully some snow and the spring when it finally thaws out around here!
