Default A good beginner crawler

Hello everyone. First post here. I have researched all of this stuff for quite a while now. I got started a couple months ago with two 1/10th Nylint crawlers and want something way more capable. What would you all advise me to get? I'll have maybe a $400-$450 limit because I am a 17 year old father who only makes $8 and hour and supports my wife and daughter.

Thanks much.

-Sam

You can make a very capable ax-10 for arounf $500. Look at the one I built for my wife, it didn't cost much at all and its brushless. Built the wife a comp rig.....

You can do a TP955 servor for $20, a quark esc for $80 and a motor for $30 and a TQ-3 for around $30. Just get a battery of your choice, I suggest the 2/3 a saddle pack. Everything you need can be found at the crawler store, exept the quark which you can ge a holmes hobbies.

Or go with a moped for $30 and a lathe for $20.

I would say if your looking to go cheap get an AX-10 with a Moped esc, 55T Lathe motor, TQ3 redio with a Traxxas reciever, and a Tower Pro MG-945. That would be the cheapest rout to go.

Is the complete kit from The Crawler Store a major deal or what? It has rear steer but do you think that with my small amount of experience it would just get frustrating? I'm really excited about getting a hobby grade crawler because I'm big into fullsize crawlers and these things are way more realistic than those Nylint junkers.

Edit: Another question... Are there any headaches with assembling one? I'm just worried about the wiring.

Rear steer isn't needed, and its illegal for comps.

Oh. I'm mainly just looking for something to play around with. I'm not sure if there are many comps on my side of the states anyways. All these parts everyone are naming are not all available on one site. Sorry if I'm being a PITA guys.

I would go with the AX 10 also and as your skills increase you can go and get supplies and start building your own types of chassis such as ladder style frames for scale looks or full tuber type chassis with 4 links etc.

I highly doubt you'll get a more capable truck out of the box, then the AX10, for the price. It's a great kit to start with, lots of cheap mods, and more and more after market parts coming out almost weekly. It also comes with easy to follow instructions. Spend the rest of your budget on decent electronics, and anything left over on your wife and kid
Good luck with your build, and take good care of your wife and daughter. It's refreshing to see a 17 yr old "man up" and take care of his responsibilities
IMO fatherless children are a major downfall in this country.

I'm probably just going to get parts as I can afford them. I have a friend who's has alot of parts laying around. I really appreciate all the help I've gotten on here guys. Probably about the most welcome I've ever felt on any forum. This seems like a great activity to get into.

X2 on the family

The AX-10 is a very capable rig out of the box, and you can upgrade as you go. There are alot of aftermarket parts available.

Thanks again everyone. I think this hobby is going to grow big time as gas prices increase because all of the 1:1 guys will build an rc rig instead and have just as much fun.

EDIT: Also, what kind of wires will I need? Or do the motors or esc come with the required?

even better... traxxas xl5 esc.. like 10-20 bucks used.. lathe motor... again10-20 bucks.. fm transmitter and reciever.. another like 30-40, battery 20-30, charger, 20-30 for a cheap one that still works... ax-10... so.. id say for like 450 you should be good to go! or... hit ebay and buy a used tlt RTC... (ready to crawl) ive seen full rigs ready to go for like 300 bucks.

The batteries are 7.2, correct? If so, I've already got a charger.

Default Just a tip

Keep an eye on the For sale forum, I see ax10s or maybe a good scaler to start out with used for a little less money. Alot of guys build em and need to fund another project and will sell em with alot of gear. Most guys on here won't sell junk to you cause we all want to maintain good friendships on here. I just saw this thread and thought a truck that someone setup pretty close would give you a chance to enjoy crawling and build experience before you have to build one up
