you have a mechanical speed control. black box has a arm that sweeps across a series of copper plates and gradually increases speed that way.

they haven't been used by most major r/c company in several years. they are not very efficient and don't give much control.

I would swap it out with most any 1/10 speed control

I guess you could look at it that way, the truck is still a 2 channel setup. you would have the steering, and throttle and a BEC plug that probably runs from the batt spot on the RX to a series of resistors.

There is a 4 chanel reciever in it lol
okok so a LRP waterproof esc will work?
also what is that black thing in front of the axle and the white thing above the motor and that little black case that the battery and throttle connects to?

it probably had a futaba attack 4 radio system, pretty popular back in the day. 4 channel stick radio for surface, especially if the previous owner also had OG bruiser as well.

the 2 boxes are the MSC and the BEC resistors. you don't need either if you are going to a modern ESC, remove everything with wires except the steering servo

For now i think i will leave the old thing in before i get a new ESC for my crawler
it is a futaba and i think you are correct
so that big black thing is something i dotn mess with until i get a ESC for it?
if i put a traxxas 2 chanel reciever and use my WK controller it will run?

in theory, if the speed controller and BEC resistors are in good shape. if not it maybe a no go.

I would hold it off the ground once you plug it in, because chances are you're throttle servo isn't trimmed right

haha
yeah i was thinking about that
the battery pack has old tamiya plugs so i cant charger it so i need to convert the whole thing to deans but i will reconfigure some new packs because i dont think i want to use that old one
so what do you think for 15 bucks? it is in great shape, no scratches on the bottom
looks like it was a shelf queen
thanks for the help and when i buy a new camera ill take some pics
is there anything i need to inspect as in parts that are known to break?
this think is basically all aluminum and i dont know if thats stock or what?

with anything that old, plastic parts are prone to breakage. the kit has been rerelased, and IIRC all the parts are the same molds. so for now if you happen to break something you can get parts. as for upgrades there pretty much non existent.

they haven't re released the scorcher, but they did the frog which is pretty much the same chassis. there 149.99 on tower for the kit

I would keep the og original if everything still works just cause its cool and in good shape.

Whoa whoa the scorcher and the frog are NOTHING alike. The frog is like the blackfoot. The scorcher is ALL metal besides the radio box and body. The scorcher is similar to the rough rider. You can't get a new scorcher unless you go to ebay and you MIGHT get lucky to find one, and it might be under $1000.00. Hell theres a scorcher body on ebay now for $90.00. Keep it man and have a blast with it. They are such fun cars to drive! It's one of my favorite RC cars out of the nearly 30 I own. Dibs if you sell her but please don't.

Wow, I wish I saw this earlier... slobin3d, Brother, you are WAY wrong, elvis, good man, you know your vintage RC.

The Sand Scorcher was my first RC, back when the dinosaurs roamed the earth. Now let me tell you about the Sand Scorcher/Rough Rider/Super Champ. At the time they were the first true offroad RC to make it to market. They were HEAVY, rear suspension sucked, stock steering was a joke, and batteries were crap, and the mechanical ESC's blew up without notice. When the first 4wd's and the rc-10 hit the market, game over.

I still miss it, but there are only two reasons to own one:

1) You were there the first time, and want one for old times.
2) You want one for your shelf queen collection.

If you need to know anything about it (or sell it), just ask.

.

True, as for the FROG pictured, those shock caps were the first to snap.

I have noticed that the rear suspension is a little stiff, it is a torsion type and i guess COULD be a little looser
i need to fund my crawler build but i think i want this just to pipe down the inner speed demon in me
not that i neeed a 45+mph car just something
i might be interesting in selling it but im guessing that i would need pics too.
what do you think i could get for it with the 4 chanel reciever and no radio or a WK radio and a traxxas reciever?

see i have this same thing accept complete - radio and body and it is complete with everything else
http://i4.ebayimg.com/03/i/001/25/57/1716_1.JPG
that is at 100 so far and i dont know how far its going.

Based on your pic, you don't have a Sand Scorcher, you have a Rough Rider. The Rough Riders sell for considerably less than a Sand Scorcher (the original bug body is 70% of the value). The battery/radio box for the chassis is missing, which will also hurt you when you want to sell it. I'm asssuming the tires are hard and cracked, and period correct radio gear/battery is worthless.
