Scale Trophy Truck Build

Hello RCCrawler, this is my first post here. I'll give you a little bit about myself and the background of this project and then I'll get into the build of the truck.

I have been a trophy truck fan since roughly 1993 or 1994 when I got Ivan Stewart's Super Offroad, the Baja. It's a great game and I still have and play it 20+ years later. There is even an android ap for it.

I was just a young kid at that time and loved the idea of trucks that can travel fast over such challenging terrain.

Fast forward 15 or so years...There is a new Baja game that I currently spend plenty of time with; Baja edge of control

Baja: Edge of Control - PlayStation 3 - IGN

Finally just a couple years ago I came across Dust to Glory on Netflix.

I have had various RC trucks in the past (4wd slash, Losi 5T, SCX10, etc) but wanted something different.

I found the ideal RC trophy truck blog, downloaded some free drafting software and got started.

After a couple weeks of planning and playing, I ended up here

I was reasonably happy with it until I scored a Brushlless Slash 2wd with the RC4wd cage on ebay for just a couple hundred bucks. Now, The RC4wd cage did not fit on what I had built, it was over 1" wider than my steel base plate and the rear suspenstion structure interfered with the cage. I shelved the original build and started over with a new steel baseplate.

The cage won't work without modification becuase it is meant to work with a stock traxxas chassis, it's not tall enough to work with my design, so I had to add 1" to the bottom of the cage to lift it up into the body.

I bought a mpa gas torch and some tubing and taught myself to braze yesterday

Shameless plug for a good book.

I am trying to figure out what amount of anti-squat to design into the rear suspension by moving around the rear link mounting ponts.

Thus far I have the RC4WD Steel 2.2 wheels and their Dune TAs, and Integy Wraith rear axle and some HR Twin Hammers rear lower links.

http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e9...pseda726e8.jpg

The donor truck came with a brand new but butchered Welchel body. It's not my first choice but it's un-used and I fixed it up with a little trmming last night. Hard to pass up on a $60 body when it's already in the box.

http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e9...ps0550ccf7.jpg

My future plans include a rear rack to hold the 2 Dune TAs, and recovery tools. I will finish up the roll cage, add a fuel cell, radiator with fans and fab rear suspension mounts for the RC4WD King shocks and their ultimate scale shocks I am using for bypass shocks. This truck will have front and rear lights and as many other details as I can add such as side exit exhaust, fuel filler, window nets, etc. I was first inspired by Topolino's build when I saw it on youtube. His work is amazing and his camera and video work are some of the best. I don't know if it's tasteless or a rip off to post his video here but it is pretty amazing stuff.

I want to build a scale truck that I can beat on. To give my mind a place to wander, I got myself a new desktop back ground for my work PC

Mmmmm Camburg....

I spent some time this weekend and built a tire rack and rear bumper.

I have my new baseplate almost finished. I need to snap some pics of it.

Re: Scale Trophy Truck Build

I made some progress this afternoon.

Rear cage is almost done, need to figure out a shock mount. Fuel cell support is in. I didn't take the time to buff the burned paint off of the tubing. I really like the EXO rear light and radiator. I painted the cap blue, too bad you can't tell.

Very cool!

Re: Scale Trophy Truck Build

My honcho front bumper donated some metal to the shock mounts. I think they look pretty darn close. I'll back them up with a 5/16" tube and bolt though the plate and the tube for the shocks.

This is looking very good! I'd say you will have a very capable truck when finished. I have experimented with offroad jumping with a Stampede and balance really determines how it lands. But its fun playing with it and finding the balance point. In mx jumping, stopping the rear wheel keeps the bike from nosing over but I'm not fast enough with my throttle finger to do that. Good Luck and have fun!

Re: Scale Trophy Truck Build

I think I am switching away from a Slash 2wd based front suspension to a Losi XXX SCT front set up. Any thoughts? If I ran the slash set up, I would cut and narrow the bulk head and run the Protrac arms. If I run the XXX SCT set up, it would be mostly stock. Both set ups would get scale shocks and new shock mounting point on the cage.

Also...Do you think this thread should move to the 2.2 forum for a little more traffic?

Re: Scale Trophy Truck Build

Any issue with using stock scx10 transmission and center drive shafts on this build? I only plan on running a 2s lipo, but this thing is going to weigh 9-10lbs. I used 3s lipos on my old slash 4x4 and they were really crazy. I don't need to subject this rig to that kind of torture.

Re: Scale Trophy Truck Build

I added an SCX10 transmission, shortened driveshaft, velineon VXL brushless and speed controller tonight. I also started playing with spring rates. I believe I am going with 40mm axial SCX10 springs Green and Red. The stock king springs are simply too light (1.1lb/in) springs.

Droop check again! I only need to limit the rear a tiny bit to keep the driveshaft spinning freely at full droop. I shortened the 110mm Kings with 100mm Integy shafts.

Nice can't wait to see more of it! What are you going to use for the front?

I am thinking xxx-sct with a fabbed upper link/shock mount. I bought a roller on ebay, so I guess we'll see when it shows up.

Re: Scale Trophy Truck Build

My fiance made some window nets for me last night. I wanted them to have a little slack in them so they move like a real net. To keep its shape she put a little wire in the net to keep the edges rigid.

This is sweet. I had an idea to do one but didn't know where to start so I put it on the build wishlist lol. Looking good can't wait to see it done.

Re: Scale Trophy Truck Build

I got my slash pro-trac front arms last night. I have been spending most of my time getting the rear shock length and mounting points correct. I want 3" of rear travel. I want the tires to just kiss the inside of the body at full compression and I want to use up all of the driveshaft angle I can. I think I am finally there.
