Newb with Sand Scorcher finally running, slight meltdown Hey guys. So I put about 1,000 man hours building this Tamiya Sand Scorcher kit. After about the 5th run I noticed a melting plastic or maybe a hot electronics smell and see that the clear plastic case over the motor has melted some. When I said the 5th run I mean I run through a 2000mah Lipo battery counting as one run. I only have 2 batteries, exactly the same, onyx 2000. So this would have been my 5th and 6th run on the 3rd day. I do have the black can motor upgrade. I am pretty much running balls out the whole time until she shuts down. It just seems like I should be and it should be able to take it? I do have a cutoff esc. Any thoughts? |
Re: Newb with Sand Scorcher finally running, slight meltdown I burnt up a tamiya sport tuned motor in my lunchbox after running it through only 2 packs. I was running a 4200 mah and it would run for over 30 minutes on 1 pack. It would just get hot from running for so long. I upgraded to an HPI 15 turn that has an internal fan and I added an external heat sink and haven't had any problems since. |

Re: Newb with Sand Scorcher finally running, slight meltdown On the Sand Scorcher the motor is sealed so the heat has no where to go. I've only run mine for a few minutes at a time, but haven't experienced any heat issues. |
Re: Newb with Sand Scorcher finally running, slight meltdown Run it with the cover off. Back in the 80's, they ran mechanical speed controls. The had a ceramic heat resistor/heat sink that was outside of that cover. You have zero air flow over the esc, that's my guess as to where the heat is being generated. |
