Default The Old School "Gasser"

Happy New Year!

So I have always loved Gasser's, and I know a few have already been built here and on a few other sites. That said I really like these, and wanted to give one a shot, besides I may even build one before I die.

So I have uploaded my inspiration, so far the body is roughed, more detail work to do, adjust a few pieces, etc. Wheel base sits at 11.3". It will keep the radius-ed wheel wells - rear.

Here's my plan:
Chassis - I found an old TF2 chassis with leafs, its en-route
Tires - Traxxas funny car fronts, hopefully they fit on vintage HPI "Torque Thrust" wheels, and Tamiya King Hauler rears, I like the side wall, they look like old Cheater Slicks, going to grind off the treads
Rear axle - Tamiya King Hauler
Front axle - Tamiya King Hauler
1/6 scale engine
Not sure about electronics yet, waiting to see how the body turns out.....

Anyway......the sketch

Inspiration.....

Building the "box"

Progress.....

Well, you know how when you take a guess and hope that an assortment of parts will fit......then you get them and they don't ! That's what happened when got the chassis. I couldn't pass up this TF2 chassis - with springs, shackles, U bolts the works, was a little rusty but for the money, had to have it. But when I mocked up the King Hauler rear end it wasn't going to work. So what dose one do when trying to install a full frame under a car that is a uni-body from the factory.......BACK HALF TIME! Then The King Hauler rear tires were way to narrow for the HPI wheels, so I took 2 to build one. Now I have a nice DOT approved tire that's wide enough to look partially Pro-street an part Gasser. Getting a little further on the body, working on the character lines and a few more body details.

Chassis....before

Chassis after...

Body / chassis shot......roughly mocked up. Rear will sit lower, as well as the front. Not happy with the Tamiya funny car fronts, even at 1/8 scale they seem a little short.

Thank you, I know your a collector of some awsome creations. Is it Dan Boyle's Gasser build's you've been aquiring? I think he just had another one of his Gasser's (the '55 Chevy and the Vette) in the recent RC Car Action magazine.

Well, slow progress but at least its a roller. Yes I realized it is a Bruiser chassis when I searched for a manual to better understand the chassis assembly, Thank you fr8cture for correcting me for some reason I thought it was a TF2. So working on body lines, re-build the roof, still not perfect, deck lid is close.......much more work to do. Took 4 King Hauler tires to build the rears!

Installed the "Lakewood" roll bar. Then came to the realization that there is not a single true 1:10 scale engine for 1:10 scale builds, anywhere. Bummed me out! So.....whats a guy to do? You pick an engine, something "Ford" of course - and try to build one. I am going to go big or go home! Going Sonny's Racing Engine's 903 cu in Pro Mod engine......or something close to it.

Engine inspiration

Start of the block, heads and valve covers.

Thank you, completely dig your collection BTW. First attempt at engine building, scale that is. Wasn't sure how well this is going to go.

Well still bummed about the scale engine availability for 1:10 scale builds. I understand Parma used to offer a HEMI set w/ blower awhile back but have since been discontinued. Since the engine in a Gasser build is so much the focal point I was hesitant to try and build one. So far the "mountian" motor is going "billet throttle" body instead of blower or FI stacks. We'll see how it fits. Chassis is in paint, partially complete, the Brusier center trans mount turned out to work perfectly as the motor/trans mounting position.

Getting to a few details, super small fuel injectors and fuel rails, front shocks and the engine plates for mounting the engine.

Engine is coming along, albeit consuming way to much time, sidetracking me from the body work and the other 30 things still to do. Sure would have liked to come across a scale version. Still have belts, spark plug wires, and those headers, lots left! Oh well kinda digging the mountain motor option for this build. I had originally thought about concealing the motor within the engine, but couldn't bring myself to chop away most of the long block!

Toys R Us was selling small engines for under $5, but I think they are closer to 1/12 than 1/10. There was a thread on them in the Scale Accessories sub forum a couple years ago

Thanks, enjoying this build, wasn't counting on building it, but so far so good. And I've seen some of your collection, you definitely have some cool rigs!

Finding header material was a challenge, tried styrene solid and tube, aluminum tubing, nothing came close. Wound up using stranded 8 ga. THHN for these.

Well I think I can finally get back to the body. Wrapped up the last few details on the 903. Collectors took up a little of real estate from the fenders!
