It had been a while since this one was on the road, so I threw her in the truck today and took her to town with me. I thought I'd stop by the lake/park on the way home and get in a few wheelies .... but Catwoman and the 'Jockey had another dance in mind. I rolled it out into the road and nailed it ... crazy fish-tailin' every time. I turned up the TSM (gyro) on the Tx and hit it again. Arrow-straight launches, but still lots of tire spin. It was just too dry and dusty. So I was just zipping up and down the road, and as I turned around I gassed it a little heavy and it cut loose and drifted thru the U-ey like a sprint car. WOW, didn't know it would do THAT.
So I rolled thru the dirt to "dust" the tires, turned the TSM up to about 2/3, and laid into the throttle and bumped the wheel. It felt like the World of Outlaws. (I don't know any "drift" references) I finished off the batteries doin' donuts and spirals and figure 8's .... sideways the whole time. Totally FUN stuff. Now I want to find a slick concrete lot to play "drifter".

Thanks, glad you enjoyed it. I had a lot of fun building this rig.
Good to have you back in the crowd, now let's see that truck of yours.

Well, with nicer weather on the way, I figured it was time to put some new tread on the rear of the 'Jockey. Hey, the tires I built it with were 30+ years old when they got back on the pavement, and ....

let's face it, they're a bit worn. I had grabbed a pair of HPI V-groove, pro-compound 2.2's for the pro-stock bike project (that one is back in the box for now) and I recently ordered in another set of the Jato wheels. The HPI's tread matches the trucks front tires, so I decided to stretch them onto the Jato's ....

and the Pro-compound should hook up nicely. I went with a little different plan this time. Instead of wrapping the wheels with just tape, I started with a layer of cork roadbed for HO train track, then wrapped a few layers of tape to fill the rest.

After cutting the beads out and stretching them over the 2.8 wheels, they end up 93-mm tall and 50-mm wide, 2-mm taller than the old ones and same width.

And now the tread matches on all 4 tires .....

and the new tires still fill up 45% of the rear track width.

I'll need to make some test hits, but I expect the launches will get even better than before.
So far, I like 'em.

Fantastic build!

As I just mentioned in TB’s No Prep GNX thread, great use of a classic chassis!

Glad you did this build thread! It looks awesome! I would have never envisioned an antique 1/12th scale carpet car could look this good!

Thanks Brian It really has a funny back-story, huh. And it has a special place in my heart. I started out scraping up something better than my little Pumpkin crawler to put in front of the boat trailer. Had no idea at the beginning what it would morph into. I try to have fun building all of my rigs and this "Weekend War-wagon" really was! I just wish they hadn't roughed up the hiway by the house, so I could (easily) drive it more. Glad you enjoyed the thread.

Thanks j0e I had a LOT of fun building this rig, and a good bit of help from the "locals" here. Glad you enjoyed the thread. And thanks for the condolences. 3 new cats have moved in with me since then, but she was one in a million.
