| North East Columbus Backyard Coarse
I have been into R/C since 12/07 and have quickly found my love in crawling. I started hitting Cowboys Tuesday night crawler thing about 3.5 months ago and needed my "fix" on a more regular basis. For the last few months I have been working on my backyard coarse and I wanted to share my pics and ups and down with you all. My hope was to build a fun and comp worthy coarse for as little to no cash. The "no cash" option was destroyed right off the bat. Lets face it you cant do anything for free. I considered going all natural rock and realized how long it would take me to collect all I would need, especially to build up the higher areas. I also thought about building the raised areas up using wood forms but then decided that the wood may start to break down and was even more of an eye sore than a huge pile of rocks in my yard. I finaly decided to shape the coarse with #2 recycled concrete and to surface that with natural rock. I found a place by the airport that sold the concrete for about $8 a ton and I had six tons dropped in my front yard. Holy crap I would not ever want to do that again. Although I am happy with the turn out, This was the biggest pain in the butt I have ever put myself through. I didn't realize that you cant shovel this stuff. After 3 days and many hours I got it moved. |

I forgot to mention in the last post that prior to putting down the concrete, I used a herbicide to kill any current growth and layed down ladscaping fabric to prevent future issues. I suggest the fabric over plastic for drainage and pest prevetion. With this done and the base of cocrete down I was ready to get the face on. With the cost of rocks at stone centers and the fact they are natural and everywhere, I chose to collect my own. This took a while but saved me hundreds and hundreds of dollars. At a guess, I would say I used between 5 and seven tons. Total cost: FREE. I was able to get all of them at nearby construction sites. Just ask the foreman. Most of the upturned stone is scrap and you will be doing them a favor. It took me about 10 trips over a couple of weeks with a Ram 1500. All thats left is to get to work building and surfacing. As of tonight I would say I am 98% done. I hope to have a get together in a few more weeks. Until then, here are a few more pics to look at. |
