Columbus Area Spring/Summer Points Series

For all of you around the Coulumbus area I would like your help. I with the help of a few others would like to set up a 2.2 "point series" comp for this spring/summer.I would also like to see the entry fees go towards prizes{prob nothing huge but its nice to have something to show for ones efforts} There is nothing in stone at this point as far as when and where. I would like to run a comp as close to every 3 weekends as we can through these seasons. I would also like to get out to the best spots we can around this area. We have a few spots in mind as of now.One being Cowboy's and the other being my course. The entry fee will prob be 5 bucks per date.

Here's where you guys come into play.

Please make any suggestions you would like as far as locations Times and overall details. I want this to work for as many people as possible.
If you know of a good location Please Post Pics. One Or Two Would Be Fine. Also Post A Map Or Directions so we can check it out. It should accomodate 3 courses and between 10 - 20 people. As far as location,
I would like to keep this within 10 miles of I-270 if we can.

If any other classes would like to run on these dates I ask some one else head that up as I am only familiar with 2.2"thumbsup"

For those of you out of the immediate area, you are all welcome as well.

I'm sure I've missed something so this first post will be amended as needed.

a few spots:

Here is a pic of my place. This is near the Morse/ Hamilton Rd area. It is better than it looks it only looks flat in the pic.
http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/k...s/DSC00877.jpg

And here is one of Tom's / Cowboy's its just off 70 east about 10 miles off of 270. It's much larger now this was back when it was first being built. Its the best pic I could find.

I suppose a mix on week and weekend dates would accomodate the most people. Maybe Friday nights would be a good compromise? Only problem may be lighting at your place, unless you are going to add some illumination? 8)

Frank Rizzo 02-15-2009 07:47 AM

At this time I am thinking all of the events will be held on the weekends. This is due to the vast difference in turn out between the Tues. night comps at Cowboys and the Sat. comps held there as of late. Another issue would be the start time. If we ran a weekday comp we would have to allow for people to finish their work days and make the trip to the site. If we have a sizable turn out this will put the issue of lighting back into play, as the only indoor spot would be Cowboy's at this time.

I don't want to rule week days out. If a demand is shown we will do what we can to accommodate. Maybe it would have to be the time we used Tom's /Cowboy's place. I will have to talk to Tom as this draw's closer due to a few issues of availability. It could even happen that we merge it with a Tues night comp. For now I will see what the popular opinion is.

Thanx for the input.,
Hope you are doing well

mchester 02-15-2009 09:48 AM

Your probably 100% correct on the difficulty of weekdays. In any case, I can't wait to get back to it this spring. Thanks to everyone involved in building a couple great courses. Hopefully we'll have a couple more places to go in the near future. I MAY be able to make a spot in my side yard in the next year. I got buy-in from the wife, so that's MOST of the battle right there... "thumbsup"

holycaveman 02-15-2009 10:56 AM

Griggs reservoir, below hover dam.

Two great spots!! And they are close to everyone.

Great idea Bob.

There is another series I am and some others are doing, so we need to schedule accordingly.

Other than that, it should be a great year for crawling!

Oh, and I will have to get you some updated pix of my place! LOL

Georgerm 02-15-2009 12:31 PM

yeah the only time i would really be able to come is the weekends.

Frank Rizzo 02-20-2009 09:56 AM

OK, No feed back on spots as of yet. Do we need to extend the location limit.
Roborg has a spot in Lancaster.
What do you guys think.
I would like to think there has to be other spots around.
I may try to check out Hoover dam this weekend and a spot off of Riverside dr wich is also bridge covered and little walking.

I think with the 10mile rule around 270 you are really limiting your locations.

I mean not all of us live in Columbus.

Oakes is about an hour from Columbus and its a great spot.

Frank Rizzo 02-23-2009 01:51 PM

I liked the pick I saw of Oakes. Understanding that Not all of us are in Columbus I figured it would be fairly central. I don't mind a bit of a drive to accomodate good terrain but I would like to stay as close as possible for the majority of the dates. I think for alot of guys it may be hard enough to break away from the wife nad kids to crawl let alone driving 100 miles round trip to do it.

That being said,
I am open to all suggestions!!! It looks like there may have to be one or two comps that will be a bit of a drive but will also be well worth it.

I think Cory's idea, that two scores will be thrown out, is a good one. It will allow those who cant make the trip to these or any specific date to remain competitive.
So, Post Ideas for locations, Pics or links, and Diretions or Maps.
We will get it together.
As of now we have: Cowboy's
My Place
Oakes
Robs Place In Lancaster
Griggs Res.
Hoover Res.
Bender Rd near Cinci is sweet But 1.5 hour drive

A few more ideas then we can narrow it down to 6 or 7 and start setting dates!

Frank Rizzo 02-23-2009 08:56 PM

I forgot a few. The park on Riverside Dr near Upper Arlington and new park/ Bird watching area on W. Whittier. about 4 min south of downtown Columbus. Both of these are quite similar to the place in Lancaster{you can see here:http://www.rccrawler.com/forum/ohio/128681-under-bridge-downtown.html

Frank Rizzo 02-24-2009 03:23 PM

I had a chance to get to the spot off of Riverside Dr today. It is at Riverside and fishinger Rd, under the bridge on the west bank of the river.
As you can see it is covered wich could be nice mid- summer for shade or if raining. Parking lot is about a 30 -40 second walk from the rocks. Here are a couple pics:

Here are a couple of pics at the W. Whittier park. The water is high in these pics taken about a week ago. The rocks continue to the base of the over look normaly. This is about two steps from the parking area.

I think you replied before I posted?? Geeeez quick draw:shock:

Frank Rizzo 02-25-2009 07:29 PM

Here is an updated pic of Cowboy's place. There has been 80sq ft added since this pic.

Frank Rizzo 02-25-2009 07:46 PM

I had a chance to get out and do some spotting today. Following Tom's advice I went to Griggs resivoir and Hoover resivoir. Both would be great places to hold a comp. Over all I thought Griggs was much cooler due to the large variety of terrain. Also, the spot under the bridge at Fishinger and Riverside is only a mile up the road just in case of rain. Parking at Griggs Is about a 1.5 min walk and between 2 to 4 min at Hoover.
Here are the pics:
Griggs:

Another area at Hoover 1min walk from the first also has its own lot and a nice scaler area sharing the same lot shown in the last pic.

Anyone who is interested please post up so that I can get an idea of how many.
A quick "sounds fun" would be fine.
And again, ANY and ALL ideas are welcome.
I just want to provide a fun outlet for those involved in the hobby and those who may be curious.

roborg5000 02-25-2009 08:01 PM

Did you say scale in one of your sentences? :D

Thanks for taking time out to go check out some spots and take pics.

Those give a great perspective of whats up.

Actually looks promising

Are we allowed on the rocks?

Frank Rizzo 02-25-2009 08:15 PM

There is nothing posted otherwise. I don't think there will be any prob so long as we aren't idiots. The watershed folks are pretty cool. I think we should set up courses at a reasonable distance from the water to stay on their good side.
The place I want to check ou tomorow might not be the same. May have to be done on the qt if at all we'll see

Griggs is also awesome for scalers!! Sweet place"thumbsup"

I took these pic's at Woodside Green Park in Gahanna not to far from your house Bob. You might want to stop and check it out some time. We would need to bring a leaf blower or something.

Thanx Jon,
I will have to fire up the leaf blower and see what else is doin' there.
Its been years since I've been to that park. What is the best way in. The map I pulled up was hard to see.

Glad to hear it. I'm working on ironing out all the details. Stay tuned.

Frank Rizzo 03-02-2009 08:48 PM

Spring is on its way and I would like to start thinking about dates. I'm thinking every three weeks and a total of seven events. Each person will be able to toss out 2 of the 7 scores. This will allow for 2 missed events or a bad days or a combo of both.

This is not in stone so as always feel free to post your thoughts.
Also, please post any dates that you know can't work for you so we may be able to plan as best we can"thumbsup"

Sounds good.

Dates, I'm probably wide open. I have a few big events I want to attend, but I don't know the dates. Doesn't matter, yet.

buckeyemann 03-05-2009 07:22 AM

Hopefully I will have everything up and running before too much longer and I would be willing to do a series. Who know's what is up this summer but you can count me in. Sounds like a real good time.

Good to hear. I'm looking forward to seeing that thing on the rocks.

Frank Rizzo 03-05-2009 10:30 AM

Getting it together.

Well, I suppose that spring is getting closer so I want to start bringing this thing together.

The short list of venues include:
Griggs
Oakes
Hoover
Toms
Rob's spot in Lancaster
My place.

I think the common number of total events agreed upon was 7.
Yes, I am aware that there are not 7 spots listed. These are the most usable spots to date. If no more usable spots are added we may just recycle one. We do need to be sure that people will be able to charge batteries without worries. Also, I want to make sure food and such is not an issue. All of these spots are quite convenient, some are even near hobby stores"thumbsup" From what I know all the places listed the only one that will not work for scalers is my place.
The only spot I can't speak for is Oakes. I have never been there but the pics Dave linked to were sweet. Some of the other guys have been there as well and from what I hear it could be a highlight. I have not spoken with Dave to confirm access yet but my hopes are that this will work out ok with him.

As far as dates:
I have talked this over with many of you in person and most seemed to think an event every 3 weeks wouold work out.

I found by using the 3 week template and starting the 1st Sat.in April.{April 4th} we could run the entire series without hitting any holliday weekends and would wrap up the series in early August. That is early enough to address rain dates if needed.

Each event will cost $5. All money will go towards prizes!!!!
Here are the dates as of now:
March 28--To accommodate those in ECC
April 25
May 16
June 6
June 27
July 18
August 8
August 29{if needed as a rain date}

I think that the venues listed cover a good area. I realize many will not be able to make all events for one reason or another. Thats ok. Each person can throw out their lowest 2 event totals. This will keep things fair and competitive. Although, It is to your advantage to make as many events as possible.

We will be using the progressive point system. This is what is used at Tom's. This means each gate is woth its numeric value in progress points. Gate one is worth 1 point, Two is worth 2 , three is 3 and so on. So, if you have completed gate 3 you have earned a total of 6 prog. points. There are 55 total prog points available by completing gate 10.

I'm sure I have forgotten something so please let me know if you think of what I may have missed.

And please keep sending Ideas for spots I will look into them.

dkingston 03-05-2009 01:08 PM

The progressive system is horrible, IMHO.

Impossible for all courses to be set up "progressive." There is a reason why USRCCA doesn't do it that way.

Just my 1.5 cents.

I agree with this Dave.

Also Ya might wanna rethink the start date. There are I think 4 of us who will be in TN at the ECC event the first weekend of April."thumbsup"

Frank Rizzo 03-05-2009 02:22 PM

I'll offer again to rethink dates but people need to post. I have edited the last post to reflect this.

I am willing to see a show of hands but from the majority of those who will be showing I think this has been the preferred system.. For those against progressive scoring please post your oppinions.

Also Dave, Will we be able to use Oakes for any of the dates?

EeePee 03-05-2009 02:31 PM

Yeah I think April 4th is the Tennessee trip?

I can go either way with the progressive points or not. It might do us some good to stick to what is Nationally recognized though?

Frank Rizzo 03-05-2009 02:35 PM

In regards to dates: We are nearing the time we need to get started so the window for change is starting to close.
Please keep this in mind and I will do what I can to help.
I would like to have this all in stone by Sunday night.
Thanx

thats 3 for no progressive and one for progressive.
As stated else where I want to wrap this up by sunday and majority will have their way.
By the amount of people posting it looks like the neys will have it.
I'll be fine either way I just want this to be fun.
