| Scratch build stryene ?
I am getting ready to start a scratch build of a VW Thing body. What thickness of styrene should I use, .040 or .060? I need it to be able to withstand my crappy driving ( lots of rollovers). Also what glue is best to withstand the abuse. Here is a rough paper mockup I created. When I get the plastic I will start a build thread, Thanks |

Any progress on this... curious how the build is going. How easy is the Styrene to work with? Nice paper model!

Thanks for the compliment! I have not started on the styrene build yet, just getting the supplies ordered. Hope to start in the next couple of weeks. Made another paper model that has some slight mods to fit the SCX10 frame and component placement. Plus some more details that I will hopefully figure out how to implement. Here is the new paper test model. Last edited by mnraaron; 04-26-2010 at 01:06 AM. |

as a model builder I have been using styrene for years to make a lot of different things. Personally I think your heading down the wrong path with styrene. It is too soft of a plastic, I dont think it will work. Styrene will snap or break very easily once it has been scored or cut, I think all the movement over the rocks will comprimise it and it will eventually break. I would try delrin or buy lexan sheets and try that. Nice idea though, good luck.

Not sure what thickness to tell ya to get but get some Tenax-7 to glue it together. I haven't built any bodies out of styrene but what little bit I've used it for surprised the hell out of me as to how strong it is. |
