| Pearl white???
Just made my first attempt at a rattle can (pactra) pearl white finish. The guy at the hobby shop told me to back a few coats of pearl white with silver. Guess what...my shell is now silver. The pearl white paint was barely visible when I sprayed it on, a slight milky look. Was the can defective or is silver the wrong backing paint to use? Thanks for any help. You should have backed it with regular white then maybe a silver if you wanted. Sounds like your guy at the hobby shop has no idea what he is talking about.

Sounds to me like the guy at the rc shop didn't know what he was talking about, I would say the silver was two dark to show the pearl. I have a pearl white body that I painted and the pearl coat went on just like you had described it, I pretty sure I only had two coats at the most and it gave it a thin milky layer that was still mostly transparent then I backed it with a few coats of white and it turned out perfect. Sounds like the guy at the rc shop should have told you to use white, not silver. |

Did you use translucent pearl? Meaning was the top of the can somewhat clear? If so you have to use several coats (sometimes 2 cans depending on body size) of it then back it with a few coats of metallic white if available until you hold the shell up to the light and can see an even paint job. If not even do a slow respray again. Then back the entire deal with silver. If you want a darker pearl you can go with black. |

Pearl white is not a solid color, it must be backed with something else. Really it should be called "white pearl". All candy and pearl colors are translucent. If you use 2 cans of paint on one body you're doing it wrong. Way wrong. |

Oh really? Sometimes I end up using 2 cans of paint on my short course bodies...especially if I'm doing 3 or more colors. Darkest colors first of course. For some reason Pactra's metallic blue just isn't that dark. I ended up having to use two cans just for 3 coats to get smooth coverage before backing it with white which was my second color along the fenders. Then backed all the colors with a coat of silver. Is that too much paint? |

I've never actually used a rattle can to paint a lid but being a kustom painter by trade...Im VERY familiar with the techniques & results in pearls, candies, metallics etc. They're absolutely correct. Any actual pearled paint is either a clear or translucent carrier with a pearlized "pigment". While you CAN lay down enough coats to get a full, opaque coverage...that's not the best way. Granted...my work vs. an RC lid is different in the fact that I would lay down my base then a pearl coat...the concept is the same. Light Pearl coats...1-3 unless ya want it "extra pearly" then backed by the color you're after for the main body. If you want a white lid with a purple pearl...then obviously you'd back it with white. If you want a blue lid with blue pearl...backed with blue & so on. I'd personally stay away from backing any pearl coats with a metallic simply because you're gonna lose the effect in the base coat. A true pearl coat casts a different color when shifted in the light. Looks white head on & blue from another angle.

Wow I guess I am using WAAAY too much paint! On my SC10 body I ended up using like 3 cans and 1 can for the backing. Obviously if I use too much it will flake off on impacts. What is a good rule of thumb for any lexan body painting using rattle cans? On my crawler lexan bodies I just use 1 can + 1 coat of backing. |

I'll typically do three light coats for coverage, then a one coat backer. Even on a sc body you shouldn't use that much paint. One can should be plenty for 2-3 bodies. When doing a pearl color you'll use as many light coats as you think you need for the desired effect, then a light coat or two of color, then a backer. | |

Here's a pic of my old Slash. One light pearl coat under the black, then two light coats of black, two orange, and two silver. [IMG][/IMG] I'll see if I can dig up on of my old TMaxx...brighter colors but still the same amount of paint used. |
