Default cutting & painting body

Is it really nessesary to get a set of those special lexan body cutting scissors that have the curved end or will regular ones work? This is my first body and its an FJ-40 so I really don't want to screw it up. Also, I am painting the body white but there will be some black accents, fender flares & front bezzel, and I might use a window tint for the windows. So correct me if I'm wrong but I should use the brush on black paint for fender flares and then paint over it all with the white, 4 coats, and then remove the window masks and spray a coat of window tint on. That sound right? I will use a piece of scrap lexan and do it in that order, I don't want the window tint to screw up the way the white looks. Thanks and feel free to post any other useful tips on painting a body, this will be my first one.

The curved lexan scissors work great. I would recommend them only because its not like you can run to your LHS and pickup another body.

I wouldn't use a brush for the black mainly because it is hard to make it look good. Usually it will be streaky and have clear spots showing through. I would recommend taping the body and spraying the black on, it will look a lot nicer in the end.

Yea I wouldn't brush paint the fender flares. I masked out everything else and painted them first, the went back and painted the yellow. I trim the body with regular scissors then use a sanding drum on the dremal to do the finish work. Seems to work goood. Hope that helps.

If you are handy with a razor blade you could simply mark the body where you need to cut it and score it along that line, then bend the lexan at the score and it should just peel away. If you are not so handy with a razor blade then I would definitely recommend the curved scissors.

Here are some tips for the paint job you're doing:
> Darkest colors first, so you're right, paint the black details first.
> Use very light coats. Heavy coats of paint is the most common goof.
> Use a hairdryer to speed up the drying process.
> Use the same brand of paint for all of the colors and tint. Tamiya works great and they make tint.
> Tint can be tricky. To get it even, you often have to make it look darker than you probably wanted. It also gets darker as it dries. I wouldn't bother with tint on your first body.
> Check and recheck your masking tape between coats.

Ain't that the truth. There is more talent there than anywhere else I have ever seen on the web.
