| Will 1:1 paint work?
So I have a can of touch up paint that matches my 1:1 truck. I am wanting to use that on my lexan body. Has anyone tried this and been successful? I read earlier someone said that automotive paint works better that regular spray paint but don't want to ruin a new body trying. |

With a adhesion promoter like bulldog it works.. I would test it first on some scrap to make sure you dont have any issue's. So many different paints on the market it never hurts to test first..

I used it on my Cherokee body to match my 1:1 Cherokee and it worked. It's been on it for 2 years now and has not pealed, or cracked. I just cleaned the body with mild soap and water, dried it good and sprayed the inside. Darren |

Depends what the paint is made of, if there's old fashioned thinners in there it'll wreck the lexan

It's a duplicolor brand... I'll try it on some scrap first and report back when my new body gets in today.

The Bulldog adhesion promoter works great. Use any automotive paint you want. |

...but if you get a can of this stuff you'll probably be fine ($20 for a can, but it'll last you years/hundreds of bodies) I tried it on my last lexan body and was impressed with the results. I used it on a drift car body that takes a lot of abuse, and not one single fleck of paint has let go. Just don't go too heavy with it, mist it in lightly a few times instead of one heavy blast. One heavy coat will dry with a slightly "scaly" pattern that is noticable from the outside. Not horrible, but it's there if you look...

My brother in law sprayed some duplicolor on a chevy body and it was a disaster.

Tested the duplicolor on some scrap first, along with some spray paint from krylon called fusion for plastics. |

Obviously the krylon didn't work too well. It did do ok on my wraith roll cage/ chassis however. The duplicolor when applied to my Chevy body stuck ok not great. I didn't have the adhesive promotor, but I applied it several times in small coats. It was still see thru so I applied some tamiya black behind it as a base and it turned out good. |

I'm not familiar with the bulldog stuff (maybe I'll check it out) but the 1:1 paint I used (duplicolor) chipped and scratched and flaked off super easy.

I use the duplicolor all the time on lexan bodies. Remember that it's a lacquer paint and will ruin enamel if you spray over it. Always use the duplicolor paints from the first to the last coat (primer, base and clear). It holds up pretty well but is still a crap shoot some days. I've had it hold up for two years on a body and I've had it start flaking after a couple weeks. Typically it holds up pretty well. I usually paint on the outside and like painting a few different colors so as its removed by the rocks it shows different colors. Good luck with your project!

I use Duplicolor as well, and build it up on the outside like War Pig. I always start off with a light coat of lacquer RC paint first though, just to ensure good adhesion. With the RC paint on first, I've never had an issue with paint not sticking.

I've had good luck with using walmart paints in the .99 cent variety, what I have had good luck with is as follows: Of course wash the body w/dish soap and make sure it's thoroughly dry. A) light dusting b) heat gun to dry ( 10-12'' away) c) dusting d) heat gun to dry ( 10-12'' away) e) more dusting f) heat gun to dry ( 10-12'' away) ok, you get the picture... for at least 4-5 coats or until I get tired of doing it or I've run out of things to do in between coats. I have my slash body painted this way and it's had no easy life, no flaking, no chipping and did not make the body brittle. good luck Last edited by rockhugger; 12-14-2012 at 10:11 AM. |

PPG automotive paint works great, and does not flake off. If you buy it from a paint shop that mixes paint on site, based on oem paint codes, they will add the proper flex agent to the blend(necessary for painting flexible bumpers on the majority of modern vehicles). I've used it on lexan bodies in the past to make replicas of 1:1 cars. You'll have to apply it with a paint gun of course, but I've backed it with Pactra aerosol lexan paint with no problems also. I would imagine that Dupont, Sikkens, etc other brands would work also, but I've always been a PPG fan so that's the only 1:1 paint I've tried.

I have yet to paint my lexan body but when I got it there was a sweet grey paint job on it ... drove it a few time and paint peeled right off. I use to do body work so I've use Bulldog and I swear by it. Any plastics it will work on just make sure you clean plastics to get mold release agents off. We used it on race cars bumpers into walls/other cars and never chip / crack / peel off.
