| Multi coloured body panels - Why?
See that a lot of people are painting their rigs with the multi coloured body panels. Have they driven 4x4 trucks for so long and wrecked panels that need to be changed out? Have they owned the 4x4 trucks for so long that the panels rusted out and needed replacing? Just curious- don't get upset. The craze doesn't seem to have taken off in Aussie lol. |

Lots of guys here in the US drive OLD pickups and jeeps and stuff. Since a lot of their trail rigs are getting beat up on a regular basis, replacing and painting a fender or a door is somewhat counterproductive. Its not a fad, or a style, its just how we do it. No sense at painting a fender, door, or tailgate if its just going to get scratched, dented, torn off, ect. It would be a waste of money. The equation is Function over Fashion. Wheeling here in the US is different everywhere you go. Some trails are relatively mild, and some are wild. Body damage is a common occurrence on the trails. Some people just own really old trucks that have rusted out beyond recognition and they have replaced one panel at a time. Some guys have literally ripped the fenders, doors, and besides off their trucks while wheeling. Last edited by jcboof; 01-27-2012 at 06:15 PM. |

My last 1:1 was painted with $1 cans of flat black from Home Depot just for this reason. Paint, scratch, dent repeat |

| Re: Multi coloured body panels - Why? older pic from my 1:1 comanche that i have yet to scale...( i plan on matching the paint scheme on the scaler) reason for the green front and brown rear is because i had planned to paint the entire jeep the forest green color ( which came off a parts jeep and i liked the color better than brown) and after wheeling it for a few months just kinda stopped caring about having a unified color for the entire jeep. Also found that mis-colored body panels invite questions for the story/stories behind where the original colored panels had went to. |

I'll claim first! Could be wrong, but I never saw anyone else do it. 11-10-2006 EP's Long One - K2-3L Columbus Ohio is littered with the different colored fenders on all kinds of cars and trucks, and it hit me one day. |

| Re: Multi coloured body panels - Why? I know a half dozen blokes with miss matched panels and/or primer patches on their 1:1's. So i wouldn't say its a craze more the fact they are too lazy to bother finishing up the body work when its just going to get beat in/down/side ways/up during the next trip on the tracks. Must be a West Aus thing to make sure its all pretty or something...(where's Camo to back up the sand groupers) As for doing it in with scalers, its just to replicate the look of the trail damage/quick repairs. |

You see a lot of it the western suburbs of Brisbane to, not just on 4wd. I wonder if they are trying to fit in... |

I own a 1990 F250 4x4, it has a bed that is one shade of blue, the main cab, fenders and hood are the original shade of blue and the doors are yet another shade of blue. The truck isn't a rust bucket, it just isn't worth the $$ to paint it so I leave it the way it is, it's just a tool to me- it only gets used when it's making me some money.

why finish body work if its just going to get screwed up on the trail again on their 1:1 rides. They are just emulating that...

The ultimate expression of this is a scaler toyota where the guy removed a front fender and hand-built the inner fender and firewall so it looked like the fender had been ripped off on the trail. Personally I never liked the mis-matched look on my real rigs. It atttracts cops and IMHO makes it look like you don't care about the rig at all. In 15 minutes I can paint a panel with Tremclad, and in an afternooon I can paint an entire rig. Sure it doesn't have the shine of "real" paint, but it looks better and slows the rust. One of these days I'll get around to replicating my most recent tremclad-coated Jeep, but right now every second scaler is an XJ, so I'll wait until something new has everyone's attention: |

Do you mean like this or just totally mismatched? |

I never understood either. If its going to get dented again why bother replacing the fender anyway? If you're going to bother you should bother painting it.
