| Prime then paint... cure in between?
I'm getting ready to repaint my F350 hardbody. The original color was red. Since the new color is going to be white, I figure a couple coats of primer would be a good idea for coverage. Do I need to let the primer cure for a couple days before top coat, or can i spray a couple coats, then move straight to top coat? |

Spray a light primer coat, allow to dry over night in warm temperatures. Then repeat the next day and wait again. Then after sanding, do the same for every coat. Use a flat white as a primer if you want.

Crap, I hate sanding. And I'm impatient.

Depends on what type of paint you are using, in any case READ THE LABEL, that is you best guide. Some brands recommend shooting the paint 30 minutes after the primer, others 1 Hr, etc. If you are using urethanes, the waiting time is shorter and it gets harder quicker. If you are using model paint enamels or acrylics you have to wait longer to get better results. The best thing to do is to use the same brand for the primer and paint. I've had some cases where I used different ones and the chemicals sometimes are not that compatible and cause trouble spots, which are more difficult to fix. Always throughly degrease the body before starting your paint job. Wash your hands every 10 minutes if you sand it so you don't leave finger grease on the body and the the sanding just embeds that into the material causing fisheyes later. Our temp and dryness in AZ right now are perfect for a good paint job. Important also is to let the body dry completely for a couple days untouched, so you don't leave fingerprints on it. |
