what about fiber glassing... can you fiberglass it and then paint on the outside or is it better to paint the inside and back it with glass... I can't seem to find a good body so im taking the easy route

You can reinforce styrene with styrene and not worry about glassing it at all. If your trying to reinforce lexan check YouTube there's a few guys who do it to short course rigs and I believe some how-to videos as well -Dan

many reinforce lexan with a layer of shoe-goo/e-6000-type of glue with some mesh tape embedded in it (drywall mesh tape or carpet mesh tape). works pretty good for what it is.

I know keeping my CA in the fridge makes it last months, even years, without it hardening. Is hardening from sitting idle something I have to worry about with the Plastruct Bondene/Tenax 7R? If it is, does keeping it in the fridge prevent it from hardening, like with CA? I can order the Plastruct in at work, and I've found Tenax on ebay. I'm thinking about buying a decent volume of Tenax, but not if it will harden. I would be buying it with the expectation it will keep for at least a few years and I can do many projects with it for a while. Does either product work better than the other? I read the whole thread, but didn't see a preference.

I've had the same bottle of Bondene for the last two years and it has about 1/3 left in the bottle. It still works like it should. So long as you don't leave the bottle open for extended periods of time you should be fine with it lasting awhile.

Thanks! All I needed to know on that. Now, is there any preference to Bondene or Tenax? Or, is it truly a toss up and they're both equal?

I prefer Tenax 7R, but they are very close to the same.

I can get 12oz of Bondene for just under half of what I can get 12oz of Tenax for. Since there seems to be only a slight advantage to Tenax, if any, I guess I'll go with Bondene.

This is SUPER GREAT STUFF. Thanks to the chop shop!!!! And all!!! So, for clarification....hard body gluing seems straight forward. Do all your gluing and surface prep, then paint. Correct? BUT, for Lexan, everything needs to be painted up first from the inside, then glued together. Correct? Is there a trick to keeping seems less visible? OR do you have to bondo the exterior and paint similar to hard bodies. Lastly, is there an inspiration thread(s) which everyone likes to check out? Bodywork porn? Thanks again all. |

Thanks again Hoosier......and yes, let's start a body porn thread! . I'd start it up, but I've only got Lexan.....and that's just paint, no body work. Gonna start looking for my first project soon.

Styrene noob question here. Im not going at doing body work yet, i am working on an interior. What would be the best choice of glue for a dash? Most of my joints are butt joints and Ive been using Bondene thus far. is it gonna hold strong enough to sand where i need and still keep good form?

I haven't got my bondene to melt the styrene at all as of this point. Not visibly atleast. I'm using .60 thick I think it is. Anything I can do to accelerate that process or to make it bond better

No sir. You can scuff the styrene to make the bondene soak in better, but with styrene that thick it's going to take several soaking wet coats. You're better off going with CA glue for styrene that thick.

I just ordered an Axial Jeep NuKizer body kit, what would you suggest to use to attach the grill and bumpers ? Sorry I know you probably get tired of answering these questions but I'm totally new to the RC world in general
