Default DIY Paint Booth

Finally finished with my paint booth.

Here is the main 'booth' part of it:

The full structure:

I needed more storage, so I build the storage shelves and the booth as one unit.

The fan I am using:

- It is from Granger (1TDR3). Once I got some issues with airflow figured out it is working pretty well.

Here is a short video I shot of it. I am just learning Sony Vegas, and I forgot to turn the wide angle off on my GoPro. Plus, it was a bad day for my dyslexia, had to pause what I was saying several times to pry the right words out of my head...

I have used it a couple of times so far with just rattle cans. It works very well, pulls the paint fumes away really well. Once in a while I get a whiff of paint, but it is brief and I haven't had to stop painting to let the fumes clear.

Nice job, what kind of lighting are you using?

Just a three-set of under the counter lighting (~$20). I wanted to go with LED lighting, but the only thing they had just did not throw off enough light. The set I have actually works pretty well, I have a couple of projects ran through it and have not had an issue with lack of light.

That looks Great...Scott. Got that exit hose pumping into your neighbors AC?

I tried...

That is the thing about living in the sticks up here in North 'Ho, the neighbors are too far away to run a hose over too them. Of course, that is not a bad thing.

Here's a good way to keep the over-spray dust down:

Go to Walmarts and get a 20"x20" box fan, a 20"x20" 3M Filtrete filter, and some duct tape.

Do you see where I'm going with this?

So the fan is at the bottom creating a down draft?

Yep. There is a void about 3.5" (the size of a 2x4) between the peg board and the bottom of the booth (where the fan mounts). The fan pulls the fumes through the peg board to the fan.

It doesn't generate hurricane force winds or anything, but it does a good job at pulling the fumes away. After getting the color down on a RC body, I put down a couple of thick coats of pearl white (brightens up the paint), the a couple of coats of backing black (protects the paint). Both I put on fairly thick, generating a lot of fumage, but I barely got a whiff of paint when I was putting these two paints on.

Optimum for painting is an enclosed booth with a HP fan feeding it, exhausting the air out. This makes sure the booth has a positive fresh air supply and you don't have to worry about the fumes igniting (blowing up) when they pass the blower motor (normal arcing across the brushes to the comm). A negitive air system like this requires that you have a good vent to fresh air, and an enclosed exhaust moving the fumed air away from the supply. For negitive air system you want a ducted fan that has the motor on the outside of the ducting, like the fan I am using.

That's a good idea. I have always vented out the rear and never thought about down the bottom.

That was my first idea, but because I was building storage into it as well I wanted the whole mess flush against the wall for anchoring.
