Tape to use on hardbody Hi all, I wil be painting my CJ with some flames on the hood. CJ-7 in question: http://i384.photobucket.com/albums/o...C.jpg~original http://i384.photobucket.com/albums/o...7.jpg~original My 1:1 I am duplicating: http://i384.photobucket.com/albums/o...C.jpg~original Now my questions are: How long to wait to mask the hood for the flames and what tape to use. I am so afraid to peel of the charcoal paint when removing the tape. Any ideas? Thanks |
Re: Tape to use on hardbody I personally just use blue painters masking tape, but you have to really watch how that tape has been stored. If it's a new roll, than the edges should be clean, but if the tape has ever been stored lying down it will have lots of particles stuck to the edges which can reduce the quality or sharpness of the edge of your painted graphic. Always use brand new tape or tape that has been stored upright. Although you may want to place it so it can't roll away. Blue mask cuts really well with an exacto you can get great sharp lines, and as long as the base paint you are sticking it to is completely dry, it will leave no residue or damage behind. For painting over body panel seams or other textured surfaces you may want to use a liquid mask. Tape will not go in to the seams, and something as shallow as a door line can allow lots of paint to bleed into the crevice and ruin your graphic. Liquid mask will fill the crevice well and can be easier to cut away and touch up if need be. Liquid mask also allows for much sharper definition of paint lines as long as you trimmed it smoothly with single continuous knife strokes. Another big benefit of liquid mask is it is clear(ish) so you can use a pencil to lightly sketch your graphic onto your primer, or base color, then you can see exactly where to trim it. |
Re: Tape to use on hardbody Thanks for the info, liquid mask will adhere enough to the painted surface? Is it easy to trim? I mean could I use the liquid mask to trace my flames on the hood as it does have a hump in the middle instead of using tape? Never really thought about the liquid mask... |
Re: Tape to use on hardbody I use the green light tack painters tape usually, the blue is fine too. Make sure you get the brand name tape, and that its new. ive had some poor results with the cheap no name tape. |
Re: Tape to use on hardbody Ok thanks for the answers |

Re: Tape to use on hardbody Alright, i'll give the liquid mask a shot... I'll try it on my other rig that usually takes a beating and requires a repaint quite often! ;) |
Re: Tape to use on hardbody I use frog tape, works really well, comes in its own resealable container to keep the edges clean. FrogTape.com |
Re: Tape to use on hardbody its pretty hard to beat vinyl for a paint mask. this is what professional masks are made from. |
Re: Tape to use on hardbody How can a jeepaholic get their hands on that hood and grill? |
Re: Tape to use on hardbody I have used electrical tape for very crisp lines but the adhesive residue sticks to newly painted surfaces. Like Stang Killa said.. vinyl tape makes good lines. |
Re: Tape to use on hardbody thats a converted YJ right? |

Re: Tape to use on hardbody Looks awesome. Maybe one day I'll do it. Really want a CJ7 but its just alot. |
Re: Tape to use on hardbody Ok so I tried the liquid tape. Put down 5 heavy coats and didn't really feel like using the very sharp hobby knife to custom cut flames on that hood after trying out on a sheet of styrene I had laying around. Ended up finding a flame pattern on the net, used a blanck sticker sheet, printing the flames on it and cut them with scissors, then went on to shoot the flames with crossed fingers!! Came out ok, had some little spots where paint went underneath the masking but all in all looks good... http://i384.photobucket.com/albums/o...2.jpg~original Versus the 1:1 http://i384.photobucket.com/albums/o...5.jpg~original Thanks for the tips guys! "thumbsup" |
Re: Tape to use on hardbody That looks excellent! Good Idea in the end using a printed sticker. although I would say even with the sticker, cut it with a hobby knife instead of scissors. They can do more harm than good in tight spaces. That could be what caused the bleed through. Scissors can destroy the edge of a cut if you are turning them and cutting at the same time. Anyway, That came out great! chances are, in the end you're going to scuff and roll your truck a bunch of times anyway, and perfect paint will rank a little lower on your list of worries. Well Done! |
