Found this old rusty Chevy tailgate...

Check this old rusty tailgate out . I made some rust slurry a while back out of steel wool, metal shavings, vinegar and bleech. I also picked up some Sophisticated Finishes Rust paint for a job I'll be posting once it shows. In playing around with the coatings last night I did this.



It started life looking like this...


So to take a step back in time, I painted a Stepside tailgate half hazardly. Once that dried and applied the iron paint from the kit. I also sprinkled some rust powder that I made into the flat spots or other areas I felt would rust faster.


A few hours later after I applied the second coating I had rust.


After that dried I sprinkled some more rust in place and applied a second coat. After that dried I had the finished product. I'll coat it all with a satin clear coat to keep it from flaking off or washing away over time. Not that his tailgate is going to see the trail, I just want to make sure my process is on point before rusting out this starting gate being shipped my way.

Hoosierdady said it would be ok to post some examples of my work with Sophisticated finishes. Here is the "Dub" and the Jeep Gladiator.(WIP) Once you get some certain techniques down this stuff is amazing.

Thank you sir. Woodwork was my hobby prior to moving to Indiana and getting addicted to scale RC. I messed up a few spots on the wood portion of the bench, but seeing as how it was just a "down time" project while I was sick it'll do .
