| Door outlines on bodies
Is there a preferred method to paint the door outlines on bodies prior to painting the rest of the body? It is something that I have never done before, but it looks like people are using a thin sharpie and then painting over the back and "painting on" the sharpie. Any guidance would be appreciated. I am going to paint up my new Jeep FC body this weekend and want it to look as scale as possible. |

I have used the pen style sharpie, it works but you need a real steady hand.

You don't paint over the sharpie....... the sharpie is done on the outside......... |

I painted the body, then used the super thin sharpie on the outside over the paint. Also check the "sticky" up top (3 stages of weathering) the black wash technique works to fill in door jams and hood line etc.

personally I think this is a technique where "less is more" as much as I hate that expression. There are too many ways to make it look fake, no offense. One thing to think about is on a 1/1, the area we are talking about is not BLACK, very little actually is. You would be better served filling in the grooves with a wash made with a mix of body color and grey or brown. You want to create the effect of depth and shadow, not a pinstripe. It's VERY tricky to make it look right. especially on lexan |

i fine use your last 3 fingers flat and drag your pen in the line, and with the flow of the line, gives you a more steady hand.If you hold your hand like a fist your bound to go of the line and f**k up..lol...... |

A thin Sharpie will work. You can get a pack of a few at dollar stores, but they don't always work the best while others work as well as Sharpies. I use this "Panel Line Pen" that I got on clearance when my LHS was closing. It works great. |

One of my tricks is using a strong pair of Wal-Mart glasses when doing any fine detailing of a body. When everything looks super large things tend to go a little better. I also use Zipo fluid on a soft rag to correct mistakes. I've done the Zipo fluid thing for over 20 years and I haven't had a problem with it attacking lexan yet. Not to say it couldn't happen.

I forgot to mention some times i will use tape along the lines as a guide,if you don't have a steady hand. This this useful for straight line or long lines. You could do it for curves but more tricky..once done peel it off the tape and start on the next straight line and recycle the tape...and if your real good do both sides and just drag your pen in between tape and follow the lines.... |
