Default Prepping Bare Metal RC4wd Wheels for Paint

I bought set of the bare metal 1.55" Landy's for my Tamiya MF-01x and still have yet to paint them. Is there a recommended surface prep prior to laying down any primer then paint on them? A month or so ago I picked up some self etching primer from the local Napa and was probably going to use one of Model Master's 2 stage lacquer paints as a color and clear coat, but wasn't sure what would work best to clean any of the manufacturing and packaging chemicals off the metal and and other metal prep work that might need to be done to them prior to laying down the primer. Any suggestions?!

Thanks!

I have a posting in paint and no body has commented

and close too a hundred have looked and one has if I did it wrong

I painted a set of aluminium beadlocks

with etching primer and flat camouflage spray paint

and then used Testers Dullcote which is flat lacquer

I have not mounted them waiting on tires and foams

I bought scuffing wheels for my Dremel there made out Scotch Bright pads

And scuffed up the both wheel halves and the SLW hubs

Then scrubbed them using dish soap and water and some ISO too make sure they were clean

The black socket caps hardware looks good

Did I say look good

I meant to say

Damn Sexy !!

A good sanding, cleaning and primer is enough for steel. If it was Alum I'd recommend using an adhesion promoter after cleaning.

That's how I did these Proto Prangs

Thanks guys, I appreciate it! Got the next couple days off work, maybe I'll hit the local NAPA for a surface prep cleaner to use on them.

Brake parts cleaner to remove any residue, scotch brite pad, hose them down with brake parts cleaner again, blow 'em off with the air hose, prime and paint. That's pretty much how I treat all my bare-metal bits and pieces and I have yet to experience fish-eye.

X2 on this method. I've done four sets like this and they've all turned out great.
