| Plasti dip as masking tape?
I'm thinking of trying plasti dip as masking tape. And by that I mean I have a few parts that are all chrome I want to paint some matte black. I however want some small parts to remain chrome. But it's such a small area masking tape is going to be too hard to use. So what I was thinking was to coat them 100% with plasti dip. Then use my hobby knife and carefully run the razor around the areas I want to paint and peel it off. It should leave the areas I want chrome still covered in plasti dip. Then paint and once dry pull off the remaining dip to have the chrome trim pop off the matte black. Or gloss black. Not sure the route I'm 100% going. If it works I may be trying this method more in the future. In theory it should work but we will see. Yes it will be way more time consuming but if it means pulling off some cool painting tricks I can't with normal tape then could be worth it before I do this though just curious if anyone has tried it or if there's a better option. I have a can just sitting here so would be free to try.

Liquid mask, Plasti-Dip may work, liquid electrical tape may work too. Never tried either one.

Not sure how much liquid mask is but plasti dip is about 7$ a can or so. Only reason I was curious is I have a can or two laying here and wanted to try and get the body mounted on my current project and then do some painting tomorrow.

I say go for it then, it should work the same as Liquid Mask, just make sure it's thoroughly dry before cutting out your details.

For sure. I was going to give it a good solid three coats or so then let it sit. Will post up results with pics tomorrow when I try it

Well the plasti dip was a fail. I think on a larger scale project it could work but for small rc parts what happens is when you use your razor or whatever to cut it it slightly pulls up the lip of what your trying to protect. In my case I have a Tamiya bullhead body and grill. Was going to paint the grill black but leave the center pars chrome. But now the grill is all black to match the rest of the truck. was worth a shot anyways. Not really any pics for me to post since it was kinda a fail.

Bummer, which might also mean the Liquid mask won't necessarily work either.

Liquid mask was designed to do exactly what he's trying to do. TowerHobbies.com | Bob Dively Liquid Masking Film 4 oz |

It works with plastidip to, have done it many times. A brand new exacto blade would have done the trick. Liquid mask would work even better. A great tip is to know citruscleaner desolves plastidip, if you in case sprayed it somewhere it was not suppose to be |

The plasti dip is working on a few other parts I'm doing but for some reason it didn't do well on the grill. I also could've had it too thick in there. But for what it is its not bad. Also not a fan of the color I chose so will be sanding and repainting the body next weekend. Will give me time to choose a good color and can go from there.

Out of curiousity does anyone have any tips for removing spray paint from a hard body? I don't mind sanding it off carefully but thinking more layers of paint=more weight. Now if it's enough weight to make a differance I'm not sure but like to keep my cog nice and low.

Try brake fluid it works for taking spray paint off of lexan. I would try on a scrap piece first.

Brake fluid will remove the paint on a hard body And online it says brake fluid or paint thinner or Aircraft remover will soften plastic dip so it can rubbed off I know brake fluid will eat the ABS plastic cause it did when I used it too remove paint And makes it look funky and pits it and makes it a little brittle And it discolors it, you can sand it but the plastic is still pitted From the brake fluid but it worked in my favor Cause it was my Toyota truggy cab and I wanted it to look rough like it had been crawled and beat up The rough plastic just added to look cause it has a dirty rusty look too it That's what I was going for Last edited by kgb424; 06-19-2016 at 03:45 PM. |

I think that's the look I'm going to try is go for a old faded type look but still look nice and clean. I used some stuff a while back on some Lexan and it was easy on the Lexan except it made it foggy. I think with a hard body I should be ok. It has a long German sounding name from lowes or homedepot. It chemically breaks down the bonds in the paint and let's you wipe it off easy or brush off. Just wasn't sure if there was a easier option or not. Thanks for the good tips guys |
