Default Tell me how! Scx10ii cherokee body

I picked this body up for my scx10 because I liked the extra scale items that were included. I picked up tamiya white for polycarbonate bodies.

I want it white. With a flat black hood and maybe the roof. I would like to make it as scale as possible.

If you had this body what would you do with it?

I would, if it was me, paint the inside white and paint black on the outside.
or...
For the more scale look.
just paint the outside of the body.
white first.. black and then detail painting..

When I paint the outside of a body, I like to spray the inside silver so when I scratch through the paint on the outside, it looks like bare sheetmetal

Can I safely trim the overspray film to cover the windows on the outside?

Yes you can, I do that a lot. I like to run an ultra fine sharpie around the edge of the window too, so I have something to visually follow when running the blade around to cut the protective film.

Ok. I need to figure out the body mount situation. Then pick up silver and black paint and spray away!
How should the window trim be done?

When painting on the outside do you still use the same paint? All the tamiya paints I have used had a flat finish on the inside so how do you get the shine if it's sprayed on the outside of the body?

Trust me, The black on the outside will look more realistic with a flat finish. Real 1:1 offroaders typically are done this way. Cuts down on reflections from the hood when you are driving. Can do fenders & rocker panels the same way. Makes it look like a special protective rubbery finish.

Yes, you still want to use a polycarb paint, at least as the first layer. The polycarb paint will act as a "primer" if you want to spray something else over top of that. But I try and stray from enamels, as they seem to a lot more finicky with what you can spray before or after them. I like using Krylon Colormaster paints and clears, as they dry in 10 minutes, or almost instantly with the use of a heat gun. But still use light coats.

I have successfully used plain old Rustoleum enamals, but with about an hour or 2 dry time in between coats, but I prefer not to.

I've also used Duplicolor Perfect Match paints from any auto parts store with good results as well.

I always lay down a good layer of Tamiya PS-5 Black (in multiple light coats) as the first thing down on the outside.

Most white paints on bodies turn out milky. You want to back that with silver. Darker colors can be backed with gunmetal or even black.
When painting directly on the lexan you want to use polycarbonate paint, others are quaranteed not to adhere and will flake off. Painting over polycarbonate paint can be done with regular paints.
Always paint multiple thin layers, I usually use a hairdryer to dry the paint, keep moving it or the lexan will warp.

What I would do:
- Leave on the overspray film on the outside.
- Apply window and light masks on the inside.
- Spray inside white with Tamiya PS (I really like their paints)
- Spray the inside silver with Tamiya TS or PS silver. (Depends on which you can get/which is cheaper)
- Remove overspray film.
- Mask eveything on the outside except the fenders and hood. I usually use liquid mask to mask small stuff. Paint doesn't creep under liquid mask, it applies nicer around curves and cleans of with water.
- Spray the hood, fenders and the inside of the body with Tamiya PS black.
- Remove window masks.
- Apply stickers, windows stickers need to be applied correctly the first time, they look horrible when you peel them off and put them back on. Put one corner in place and rub it on from that point, laying it on flat all at once will fail, you will end up with bubbles and/or wrinkles.

If you don't like the windows stickers you can also paint the window rubbers with PS black on a small brush and spray some PS Smoke on the inside.

Paint the fenders on the outside with truck bedliner. It produces a tough textured finish that stands up to scraping very well. Make sure to use Scotch-Brite on the outside of the fenders first, then spray with Adhesion Promoter, then spray with a couple coats of bedliner.

Here's an example of the stuff on my Telluride trail truck.

Used:

The stuff is laughably weak for use on an actual pickup truck bed, but it's great for scale models.

Ok so I am going to pick up solver and black today and hopefully some plastic shock hoops for body mounting (toyzuki chassis) and start spraying. I will do the silver inside and the black outside. I am thinking mask the inside, spray silver and back with black, cut out what I want to stay clear on the outaude lay the white down then tape off for black.
