| White paint
I goofed up a body this week by spraying silver backer over white paint and apparently I didn't have the white down thick enough. The silver darkened up the paint and messed it up. I've got a replacement body on order (I'll just use this one to bash and keep the new one nice) and I'm also painting a Yeti body white. How many coats should it take before backer isn't going to darken up the white? I'd just skip the backer altogether but I figure if silver will darken it, getting mud up under the body is going to also. Is there a way to tell when you've got enough white on there? |

You shouldn't have to use any more than 1 small can of spray paint for a body, (that's all I use for SCT bodies, and they have more area to cover than a crawler body). When painting white: Spray a couple light coats, letting each coat dry at least 10 minutes between coats. When they're dry, hold the body up to a light source and look for light spots, those are the areas that need touch up. Once you're satisfied with the paint coverage on your body, let it dry thoroughly, ( I let my bodies dry for 24 hrs before backing, and, I back with black, and it didn't darken the color). |

Funny you posted a Ram body as that's what I had trouble with. Can't tell from the pic but it darkened up noticeably. |

It doesn't look bad at all. Take a fine point black Sharpie, and line the doors and hood like I did in the top pic, it'll make the paint pop. And if you don't like the way it looks, a little paint thinner or mineral spirits on a rag, will take the lines off. You have to remember that silver paint has more acetone in the paint mixture, so when you used it as a backer, if the white paint didn't have a day to dry, it may have re-activated the chemicals in the white, and actually blended with it, causing dark areas. | Re: White paint What paint are you using for the white. My dad and I always use pacta white overcoat which is now duratrax white overcoat. It is specifically designed for backing and isn't regular paint. Sent from my SM-G920T using Tapatalk |

I'm using Tamiya white. I sprayed silver Rustoleum as a backer.

I usually spray faskolor paints with an airbrush but I wait for 2 days usually and then spray the overcoat. The durtrax overcoat isn't cheap at $8 a can but I think it is well worth it. Sent from my SM-G920T using Tapatalk |

I used the Tamiya white also, but backed with Tamiya black., The Tamiya polycarbonate paint is an acrylic, the Rustoleum is an enamel. The chemical construction of the 2 paints are different, besides the added acetone in the silver. Like I said before, it still looks good, and by the 10 foot rule, which is the approximate distance that your friends and competitors will see it out on the trails, it looks fine | |

I appreciate the help. I went ahead and ordered the Duratrax, both paint and cover. I don't want to risk another $60+ body. Much appreciated.
