Magnets

Hey guys, Im looking to mount a proline classic bronco onto my scx10.2 chassis and was wandering if anyone could recommend good quality magnets for mounting, pictures of how other folks have done it are welcome.

Thanks, "thumbsup"

I havent received them in the mail yet but BangGood has a super cheap magnet set that fits over the axial posts. I got them for a body I'm working on and hope they work out great. Reveiws so far are good. BangGood seems to be stepping into the RC parts department more and more each day. These are definitely not going to be used for bashing/racing application, but for scx10ii and other scaler use, they should meet our expectations (not a huge loss anyways hence the price) They come from China... so its gonna take a long time to get here..

Harbor Freight sells a tube of tiny rare earth magnets for $3. They're nearly impossible to pull apart with your finger nails, I'm sure they would hold a body on just fine.

Wide array of options. Bought some 1/2" x 1/8" and they are so powerful get two stuck together without something between them and you will have a fight on your hands to get them apart.

Plus they are located in TX not in China

Magnets are a PITA. One roll over and your body will move and/or come off. Don't roll and you'll be OK.

I ordered these which came with cups to capture the magnets.

The scale of them is hard to imagine, the whole stack is no bigger than a quarter. They're strong, like really strong. That's one magnet on a curved surface, wrench weights 1lb 9oz :lmao::lmao:

Thanks for this. I have tried different methods of holding the body on with magnets and always ran into the same problem. I have some pretty strong magnets but I've never found one that can withstand lateral sheering forces.

You're welcome. Just remember that those cups help a little bit, but a roll over can still overcome the "shear strength" that the cups provide.

Re: Magnets

Magnet on the chassis side and a thick washer on the body side will stop them sliding off.

I tried a set of these, and I would say for them to work well, you would need to have the body held in place against lateral forces with some other means (say, posts glued to the inside of the body dropping into holes in the chassis) and then rely on the magnets to hold the body down against the chassis.

I used them on this temporary body I put on my yeti, and it works well enough, but pops off on a decent tumble, even though the body fits fairly snug to the chassis. The bottom magnets are screwed into the chassis, and the body magnets are GOOP'd in place. (The purpose of this body is/was simply to keep the snow and crud out of the steering and internals while being hidden by the score body).

Rather than regular velcro, I will be switching to "Scotch Extreme Fasteners" as it has a a more positive 'lock' into place over the typical hook-and-loop fastener. There may be something comparable under the velcro brand.

I like the version where the magnet drops into the cup; it probably works much better that the cheap RC version I got.

Not like I need a good reason to go visit the Lee Valley store. :)

Re: Magnets

Not as relevant, but I tried using velcro and modded the posts. AxialFest gave them a beating and my body was falling off on any hard roll

Never doing velcro again

I like holding my rig by the Honcho cage anyway, so magnets still would be a pain for me

Re: Magnets

I'm going to use ring magnets that are 1/2" od x 1/4" id x 1/8" thick. These will fit over the pin post and I use two per post. One glued to the post the other glued to the body. The post through the center prevents any shear movement. You can buy a stack of 10 for $8 off ebay.

Re: Magnets

I used those magnets from China on my rig and was very unhappy with them. They are super strong but the problem I had was that the magnets were constantly letting go from the body - the superglue kept letting go. Rolling also caused the body to come off. I'm building a new body and am resorting back to the standard body posts.

Re: Magnets

Anyone tried 3M Dual Lock? Seems like it might work better than Velcro. It also gives a little *snap* when it goes into place.
