Default Testor Paint for Lexan Details

I'm starting to paint my lexan body and would like to know the best way to paint the details. I'm planning on painting the body white with tamiya polycarbonate paint, back the white with silver tamiya, then back with black tamiya.

If possible, I'd like to hand paint the very small details (wipers, hinges, etc) with black Testors enamel model paint on the inside before I start with the white. I've read that enamel paint does not work well with polycarbonate but was wondering if the very small details will cause a concern. Or do you suggest I paint the details black with the Testors model paint on the outside of the body at the very end?

Thanks.

I've done that before, on the inside. I didn't work well. It looked really good at first but as the Lexan flexed, the enamel started flaking off.

I don't have info as to what does work, but I can tell you what didn't work for me.

I use Sharpie silver, black, and white paint pens. Works good, and doesnt flake. Even if it rubs off, super easy to touch up.

Thanks, I'm thinking this will be my best bet. I'm assuming you use the Sharpie on the OUTSIDE of the body versus the inside, prior to paint?

you can buy acrylic brush paints. not sure what testors makes, but i use TONS of acrylic to brush details on to my custom action figures.
look for paints from
Tamiya
Mr Hobby
citadel

you could probably brush those on from inside (keep in mind it will show up glossy from the outside) or just touch up on the outside as needed if you want a dull or matte finish.

out of curiosity, what body are you working with?

Thanks for the reply.

I'm working with the Jeep Rubicon body from Proline.

Yup, go acrylic. It'll flex and not flake off.

Yes, outside after painting.

Painted the white last night. I think using a Sharpie for the trim lines will look great.

Thanks...yeah I'm planning on using a thin sharpie for the outlines. Yes I did mask the windows...the masking is white so it looks like it's not masked! Planning on doing the rear windows black and front clear to make it identical to my 1:1 Jeep. Cutting the front grill out was a lot of work but I'm using the lightbuckets and front grill insert from DinkyRC to give it a 3D look.

I was reading about a Lexan body that had really faint panel lines - too difficult for the paint pens, so he actually MASKED them, came out incredible... was on a Tamiya Forum.

I suppose that's always an option in some situations!

Here’s before and after photos of the panel lines. I think the lines really add to it!

For those commenting on paint for brushing on the details, I've used regular acrylics for airbrushing and detailing from Michael's and Walmart for 10 or 12 years now with no flaking or issues.

Acrylic and lacquer are two different types of paint, are you mixing them together?
