Default Can liquid mask go bad?

Im trying out liquid mask for the first time on a new body. It's thr bob lively brand I just bought it from my local rc store. It is very grainy looking does not spray or brush on smooth at all. I shook it and stirred it very well before I opened it. I'm thinking that it's no good. But want to make sure I'm not doing something wrong before I take it back. I even tried thinning it with water too and no luck. My rc store only had this one bottle and it has literally been on thr shelf for as long as I can remember. Lol.

It should be a thick milkshake consitancy.

I've used stuff that was over a year old without issues and I've heard of people useing much older.

What are you trying to spray it with? I use hobo freight's HVLP gun at 50ish psi. they go on sale for ~$12 regularly.

It's not far from it... It will never brush on consistant, it should spray ok though. It's like spraying elmers glue, not paint.

Pictures of the issues it's giving you?

Pictures aren't the best. But here is where it was brushed on.

And here is where it was sprayed.

You can see the gritty texture to it. Even when I just dip my finger into the bottle it looks grainy like this. It does not level out when it drys either.

It looks about right. It's not going to even out or run.

Spray 2-3 THICK coats and let it dry completely in between. The body should be completely white after each coat, let it dry until it's a clear blue color. It's not going to be 100% uniform, nor does it need to be. Just make sure to use enough.

It's so grainy that it will barely spray. I've seen several videos on it and it looks nothing like this. Every video I've seen it sprays out uniform and consistent. Even after I tried thinning it out with water it still would barely spray.

Ok so I went and bought the exact same gun this guy is using in this video and I'm using the same mask. I've adjusted air pressure and flow until I'm blue in the face. Look at how smooth his spray is. I just put in 3 coats and my body looks like a popcorn ceiling

I don't know why others are saying it looks about right... Unless everyone is using ancient liquid mask. That doesn't look anything like my results. Mine has always been smooth like thick elmer's glue. No texture. I'd return it, especially since you said it's been on the shelf forever. It reminds me of some wood glue I had sitting around for years.

There is no way that it is going on right!!! I would not try to cut out graphics with it looking like that. Take it back and order some from RPP!!! JMO
From a guy that has painted over a 100 bodies.

Thanks guys. That's the conclusion that I have come to. I peeled it all off this morning and ordered a new bottle off Amazon.

If liquid mask freezes it will no longer be any good. My local hobby shop here in Calgary can not order it until the weather warms up in the spring.

I typically dilute mine with Windex until it's a similar consistency as light cream or 2% milk ish. I've air brushed about 150 bodies so far and Windex seems to work the best.

I wonder how close the chemical composition of it is to bicycle tire sealant?

(NOT the car tire stuff...)

I oughtta test out some "Slime" brand as a liquid mask next time I need to pick some up...

It actually sounds like it is close to aqueous coating used in commercial printing. Aqueous coating can take one freeze/thaw cycle before it is permanently damaged. Also, old AC can take on an "oatmeal suspended in milk" look when it is past usability. In regards to thinning with Windex, that makes the comparison stronger, as one of the vehicles in AC is ammonia.
