Real Rust Paint

I just stumbled across this at the hardware store.

at first I cheaped out thinking I wouldn't need the activator and I could use vinegar but that didnt work, the activator is much needed.

This took maybe 2 hours mostly in dry time.

The process is simple, Paint on the Iron oxide paint which is a dark gray/black and thick like paint.

let it dry for an hour then apply the activator which is watery thin. let that dry and thats it.

I'm not sure how durable it will be on wheels but I'm not too worried with that first set of wheels.

I use a product called Sophisticated Finishes. It works the same way. Iron infused paint coupled with an activator. Works great!

That was the name I was looking for, and I thought Michael's sold it, but when I went to their site, it didn't come up. "thumbsup"

They used to carry it but stopped sadly. It was awesome to buy it on their weekly 40-50% off coupons.

What hardware store had this in stock?

I have Sophisticated Finishes, but it would be awesome to find something local.

I'm surprised vinegar didn't work for you. It seems to work for others that use Sophisticated Finishes.

I got mine from Dick Blick (what a name! :ror:). I believe they often have coupons, but nothing like Michael's, etc.

Re: Real Rust Paint

I found it at a local Ace Hardware, they had merged with a local paint store so they might have had a few more specialty items than usual.

I figured this would be old news to a lot of folks but I didn't see a thread dedicated to it so I thought it was worth posting up.

Now I just need to hone my skills so I can apply this more sparingly (a better brush should help a ton).
