Default Help with a paint color

So I lost my dad several years ago and found a couple pictures of his FJ. I’d really like to paint a body to match as a tribute to the old man. Anyone know where I can find something close to this?

Pictures are old, I found a stick photo that might help more

Thanks for any assistance!

Sorry to hear about your loss - awesome to tribute a truck in his honour though!

Might be hard to find an exact match. Are you painting a lexan body or hard body (not sure if a hard body newer FJ exists)? If hard body, you could use automotive paint in an exact match.

If lexan, your best bet might be to try mixing some airbrush colours until you find a close enough match.

If you need an aerosol can, try searching the Tamiya, Spazstix (horrible paint, doesn’t bond well IME), Pactra or Duratrax colours on Google so you can get an idea of what the shade will look like. I’d back it with black since it’s quite a dark color.

Good luck!

Appreciate the suggestions. It’ll be the HPI Venture lexan FJ shell. I looked at the first three you mentioned and didn’t see anything close. I’ll take a look at Duratrax as well.

Sorry to here about your dad.

I don't think that color exists in the polycarbonate paint world, but, I have read here, that some folks have had good results from automotive paint if you spray with a clear lexan spray first. I myself, have not tried this method, so I can't speak from experience. If you do go this route, you could order the actual color you want to match from Auto Touch-up sources. It's kind of expensive, but if you're into accuracy, it might be the only way to go.

Another option, might be to use a transparent purple backed with a metallic gun metal. I would do test runs on scrap lexan, by varying the coats and backing colors, until you get a close match. It's gonna look nice, that's for sure.

Do you think light coats of this backed with black would achieve close to the same color?

If you do thin coats and back it with black it will darken the base color, how thin to achieve this will take some experimenting. You'll want consistent coats before backing it with black for the best results, if its not consistent you'll get a few different shades of darkness/lightness.
As others have mentioned try this on some scrap lexan first.

I dont see any of my usual go to paints from Tamiya (PS colors) being that close, they have a few purples but theres no real hint of red in them.
This is what I was looking at

I’ve used that metallic purple before. It’s a fantastic color but way to purple for this.

58_Willys could be on the right track. If I'm not mistaken body color matched bumper paint has an additive to make it flexible so it doesn't crack and peel when the bumper flexes. Might be worth investigating. I have no idea how well it will adhere to lexan though.

That looks maroon to me.

Maybe Duratrax Metallic Burgundy backed with black?

Even that might be too light though.

I would probably check local automotive stores and see if they have color match spray cans in the automotive/bodywork section.

Yea I might do that. If all else fails this will just be a shelf queen body and I’ll keep a spare to put on when I go crawling. Thanks everyone!

I would go with Tamiya PS 27 translucent red back with Tamiya PS 23 gunmetal then black. It will have that maroon color that will pop in the light.

I think you’re on to something with this. Found a couple reference photos while google searching

Wow! Found my R33 color.

BTW...it's PS-37 not PS-27. That's fluorescent yellow.
