Rustoleum Painters Touch Matt and SEM Paints

I want to add some matte finish to my TRX4 as well as paint the fenders and bed liner with a matte/satin finish paint (not bed liner).

I read that the Rustoleum Painters Touch Matte clear coat is good. It will adhere to the body and has a nice matte finish. However I also read from some that it yellows and can get ugly looking due to finger prints and other contact that fouls the appearance. That was just one person who may have handled it too soon or gone really heavy with the application.

SEM paint seems to get very good reviews. Stays on and is somewhat cheaper than Tamiya paint, but still a bit pricey. The satin black has the look I want for the fenders and bed. I am thinking this could also be a good basic backer.

I used Tamiya PS-5 Black and PS-55 Flat Clear for my fenders and bed liner. It gives a nice dull flat black finish and has held up really well.

Everytime I see your paint job scheme on this truck man... Really like it.

Regarding SEM and Rustoleum. I tried a little of it, but I'm going to stick with Tamiya PS paints or Airbrush. I'd probably be ok with using the SEM for a backer, but those bigger cans seem to output more pressure and are harder to control for me. Probably need to keep them a further distance away from the body than you would with a Tamiya rattle can or airbushes.

I'm also pretty sensitive about paint smell (my wife even more-so). The SEM seemed to smell worse than the Tamiya can and took longer to off-gas for me. Big reason I'm about to switch to water-based airbush paints.

I may just do that. The SEM paint just jumped to $21 on Amazon.

What is the silver/gray color? I have gunmetal that I plan to use and may try darkening it a bit with some black backer.

It is the Tamiya PS-63 Bright Gun Metal

Hmmmm, never thought of using the SEM paint on a rc body. Thinking back when I painted my gray bumpers on my Volvo black, they came out fantastic and durable! I'll try the black bumper coat on my next rc body

I checked more on the Rustoleum Matte finish. The person who used it is a very good painter and does a lot of bodies. However he is also the one to say it absorbs oils and stains easily (fingerprints, fuel, grease, etc). "Looks good for a day" is what he said. Not what I want so went with PS-55.

It makes sense, the Rustoleum stuff is oil based vs PS-55 water base.
