Default Painting Outside - Two Colors

I prefer to paint trucks on the outside and am looking for advice for painting two colors. As you can see in the picture below, I painted my current body white on the outside first then added the black gears right on top of it. I painted the inside silver. No problem.

The next body that I paint, I want to paint black then paint other graphics on top. I want to use either a metallic green or gold. However, for obvious reasons, I don't want to paint those light colors on top of the black.

I'm certain that I can do this but I don't want to take all of the extra steps that I think will be involved if somebody has a trick or tip that can save time or steps.

Any advice or tricks for painting a light color over black on the outside?

Shoot a light base ,like grey primer, white or silver under your graphic color. For Metallic colors I'd prob'ly go with silver.

Thanks for the tip. I see now that I haven't asked my question very clearly.

My question is more about how to lay out the graphic. If I paint the truck black, then lay my stencil down, and paint the metallic color it will darken and look bad. If I mask the graphic first, then paint black, remove the mask, then try to paint the graphic I'm faced with a masking challenge because I'd have to mask off the black around the graphic and then paint the metallic. I also thought that I could first paint the graphic, cover it with liquid mask using the stencil as the quide, paint the black, then peel off the liquid mask to reveal the metallic graphic underneath. A lot of work.

Lay down your black base, mask off for watever design u want n lay down a light color base for your design. Then go over that with the color u want the design to be. The lighter color base (white, silver, primer) will cover the black so your metallic color will show up nice n brite

Okay, I see what you guys are saying now. Doing it that way means that it only requires one masking step. Excellent. Thanks!

Youre very welcome. Ive got alot of models from wen i was a teen, sucks theyre in storage in indiana lol. But i learned quite a bit paintin them, plus ive done a few 1:1 cars n i know a couple guys that do body work n paint. Where i get confused is paintin the inside multi colors n tryin to mask off n paint them in the right order.

Cant wait to see pics of your next attempt. Glad we could help

All done. I am not crazy at all about my decision to use a metallic for the second color. Should have kept it basic with a red or maybe a gray, but I thought the green would look good with the bronze wheels. Hopefully, it will look better when it's all scratched up, dirty, and beat to hell! lol

You can use this as a learning experience. Even if you don't really like it, it's prob not a paint job that many other ppl have so that's pretty cool. Overall I think it looks well executed and the color isn't bad in the least.

A thin gold ring in all of the cogs would tie it all together nicely, but it looks good now too. Just a thought.

I totally agree that would really look nice! I used white for the base. I probably should have used a silver since when I pulled the tape off it left a slight white trace around the edge of the gears. Laying down the flat on top did help to reduce it though. Now I have to finish up a few details and then figure out how to mount the mirrors since the holes were not pre-drilled on this body. Thanks again for all of the help and comments!
