I've thought of trying this ever since i scooped up a container of left over filings from our brake lathe at work. This idea might work perfectly for the body i'll be doing up shortly

Yes but not as realistic as this method ... it's real rust with its texture and colors variations. Can't reproduce that with the salt method, at least not as easily.

I ended up not using the filings i had only because i couldn't find them at the time :( i used the iron paint method instead. I still don't know where my stash of iron filings disappeared to...
