Default PTI Goliath Tuber Finished

I finished my PTI Tuber. I finally have it the way I want it. I almost sold it a few months ago. Now, I think it will keep it around.

It originally looked like this. It had:
1. AE Spools front and rear. http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXDGD6&P=7
2. T-Maxx toes links as lower links http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/WTI0001P?&I=LXSP06
3. RC10 MIP Driveshafts http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXCCZ5&P=7
4. AE Aluminum T-Maxx Shocks
5. Revo cantilevers http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/WTI0001P?&I=LXHGD2
6. 55t with 12/87 gearing
7. Above the axle steering mod. I used T-Maxx turnbuckles for this also. http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/WTI0001P?&I=LXDDW0

I hated this set up. It had a 10.5" wheelbase. It was too stubby.

So, I made some changes.

1. I stretched it one in by using revo links just in the rear. It gave a 60/40 style weight bias http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXHFZ8&P=7
2. Added a t-Maxx drive shaft to the rear.
3. Bought some shocks that didn't leak. I used some new Maxx ones with the grey bodies.
4. OFNA wheels with rock rings.
5. Tuber frame

It looked like this

It was getting better, but the wheels were too wide. It was 11.5" wide. The rear pumpkin dragged on everything. I tried a few wheels and found the HPI Split 5 to my liking http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXEXA1&P=7. The truck is now 10.5" wide I also added a GD-600 gear reduction. http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/WTI0001P?&I=LXSL79 Now it really crawls.

I ditched the 4WS. Now it looks like this

Here are some pics with it's big brother, my NN Clod. You can see the family resemblance in the shocks.

The only thing I'll probably do now is have the tube frame powder coated. I'm thinking red or Grey.

Tell me what you guys think.

Pretty cool. Looks like the cantilever setup is working well for you. Careful with powdercoating - It looks nice, and is fairly durable, but it isn't impervious to the rocks. It will probably end up getting chipped, and it will be much harder to re-do the powdercoating than it would be to re-paint it every now and then.

Thanks for the tip. Maybe I'll save some cash and just buy a can of spray paint.

Really, that's what I would do. Don't get me wrong, powdercoating looks awesome, but then you have to take into account clearance for all your mounting areas, or grind down the coating where need be. And with paint, you can change colors whenever you want. And if you want to freshen it up for pics or whatnot, it is really easy to hit it with another coat. I really dig this crawler - did you fab up the tuber yourself?

I like the yellow, actually. But red would be cool too - maybe metal flake 8-)

I can't take credit for the tuber. I bought it from BrighterShades over at one18th.com. He made several. My buddy and I both have them. My buddy's Goliath still looks like mine did in the first post. His is the yellow one. The tuber is the only change he has made.

I'm leaning towards red.

Should I put the rock rings on these wheels? I kinda like them without them. What do you think?

That's a tough call - those Split 5's are nice, but rock rings look pretty sweet too. I can't decide

Matching color rock rings would look cool, but I doubt the paint would last very long on the rocks.

if you can get your hands on some 1:1 airplane paint use that...it holds up to alot...

it holds up to chipping well...its almost like a "jell coating"

Rocpede this is OW3ND......glad to be back......

I sort of followed what this guy did:
traxxas sliders on a goliath

One difference in that I used a universal on both ends.

On the end that is connected to the spur gear, I drilled out the slider to 3/8" (I think) and it slid over the existing diff cup. The slots were a little wollowed out from use, so the pin threaded right through. You may need to grind a little to make them fit.

On the back, I used the Traxxas pin also. I used some washers to limit the side to side shifting. I still rotates on the output shaft, but it doesn't affect power transfer.

I think it is totally finished. I painted the tuber grey to match the wheels and added some neoprene (sp?) doors and top. I'm pretty happy with it. Now it's time to get it dirty.
