Default My Version of a PTI Crawler...

I'm not really into showing off my junk, but there's so few of these PTI crawlers and this does have some unique stuff on it, so I thought I'd post up.

So I've had this thing for almost 2 years and it has taken me FOREVER to finally finish this thing. It sat in pieces for a long, long time. I shut myself in for a weekend and after lots and lots of swearing and broken drill bits, broken taps and bloody fingers, I got this:

Specs:

Wheelbase: 12 inches
Center Clearance: 3"
Motivation: AXI Brushless Outrunner (2212/26)
ESC: Quark Pro-Car 33A
Battery: 6-cell 2/3A and 2s 2140mah lithium polymer.

Mounting links on PTI axles is a pain in the butt. I really wanted to avoid using alot of aluminum so I mounted my lower links to the bottom of the steering knuckles. Not the BEST method, but the links are close enough to the wheels that they don't really hang up on much. Since these pictures were taken, I've swapped in all yellow springs and relocated and upgraded the servo.

I am absolutely shocked at how well this thing works. I've also mounted the battery up high (as opposed to mounting on the links) because we have lots of water and mud around here and I wanna keep my electronics somewhat dry.

So,
Break anything in the axles yet? I kind of want one!

I've beat on it a bit, and have not experienced the ring gear slippage that others have complained of, so we'll see. I'm geared too high right now so I may just lack the torque to do any damage just yet....

Shimming seems to be the only way, but toyota_yes_please said his gears slip even with shims.

shimming fixed it for a little while...but the nylon gears are just too weak for crawling. I tried to make some Team Losi gears fit on the spool but i just didnt' have the tools to make it work so i bought some tlt axles and stuck them under the pti chassis. best of both worlds

Once I gear down and get my tires glued properly, we'll see what happens with the gears. I too have some TLT axles on the way but they're for a project that will probably end up on Ebay when it's done....

If anything, I'm lovin' this brushless setup. Running a 2170 lipo, I'm getting an hour and half worth of runtime. And my whole rig ready to run weighs in at 3 lbs on the dot. It crawls with pretty good torque and I have LOTS of wheelspeed when I need it. It's allowed me follow some really weird lines. But the reverse delay on the ESC is maddening...

Nice! I wondered if you were ever going to use that motor plate

Yup... This thing has literally sat in pieces most of the winter due to time constraints. The irony is that I may end up just using it as a template to drill holes in the motor mount. The plate doubles the thickness of the mount and I can barely get the pinion on the motor shaft and still have it engage most of the spur gear; if that makes sense. Essentially, the motor shaft is juuuust a bit too short. But it's been working fine so far.

I can't get over how quiet it is with the Quark. I ran my VMG last night with a Mamba-25/Park 370 and it's LOUD; whines like crazy compared to this thing.

the two controllers are night and day difference. Those little 22/16 motors give a reaaaaly long run time, which is awesome.

Looks good Ken. Whats the TLT plan?
Guys and mine are up and running if we could ever all get together at the same time...

Well, I got this tube frame sitting here, a stealth tranny, I got the axles just the other day, some widerners, some wheels and some Imex Claw Dawgs plus a brand new Rebel 2 and a lathe that have sat for ages. Now I just need some Maxx shafts but I keep getting outbid on Ebay cuz I forget to check it... so that's the plan.

So you got your RBX? We gotta make plans. I've been meaning to contact you ever since I got this thing finished....

You could hang the stealth tranny really low in a tuber and still get the motor down far. That would make a killer setup, especially since the stealth has 3 mounting spots triangulated around the output shaft. It would make a very stiff mount.

That's kinda what I was thinking. The base on the thing is kinda long so the shafts might not clear the frame. I gotta do some mock ups and see... the more I think about it in my head, the more problems I forsee...

You must have it programed with reverse delay?
I have that esc and don't have any reverse delay.
Check your programing.

No reverse delay at all? JRH was having the same problem with his. I'll doublecheck the programming... There isn't a HUGE delay; maybe a second at most. Just enough that it makes it difficult to save yourself from a rollover... ugh...

yeah, there is a slight stall between Forward and Reverse, even with the immediate forward/reverse no brake programming.

Well, I've been doing a bunch of mods on this thing since I started this thread and I'd figured I'd bring it back from the dead and yammer about some of the stuff I've done.

The first thing I did was trim up the body a bunch and dropped it about another inch. I also got the GD-600 installed. This thing is now low and sloooow.

With the increased torque, this thing has been eating up spurs like crazy. Turns out I had the mesh all screwed up and the ever-so-slight flex in the motor plate didn't help either. I braced up the motor plate using zip ties and fixed the mesh and that helped alot, but when a tire got really jammed, all it took was a little "test throttle" and that outrunner would chew up the spur in the blink of an eye.

So I made myself a slipper clutch. These things don't have a tranny, really. Just a spur and pinion (hence the addition of the GD). The spur is sandwiched between two metal outdrives. The outdrives are linked through the spur with metal pegs. I just took out the two metal pegs and put in six slipper pegs and sandwiched the whole thing together.

And surprisingly, it works great. Now I don't have to worry about stripping out the spur, or worse yet, the axle gears. Which is unfortunate since I just spent 15 bucks on a new set of backup gears.

Now I just gotta work out my tire situation. The only thing I've figured out so far is that I know jack diddly about tires and foams....

I can't sleep, so I'm resurrecting this thread once again now that I have some updated photos...

It now has flipped axles and I removed the skid plate, I went from the stock RPM rims to some double narrowed HPI Split 5s. Then I upgraded to some RC4WD beadlocks. That extra weight at the wheels helps make up for losing the 3 oz. that was stuck to the front skid.

I added wideners to clear the body and I must say that my homebrew in-line slipper has worked flawlessly and saved many an axle gear so far.

Even with the suspension setup with shock in a more vertical orientation, I still need to some how limit the articulation. I'm getting around 80 degrees. With the suspension set up as a "belly dragger" I get better CG, but my articulation goes to 90 degrees. Right now, the only thing that limits the articulation is the body. But I get very little torque twist. My main problem right now comes from the suspension unloading.

Anyway, I've also included photos from a new spot I found over the weekend. The photographer didn't understand that it helps to get the crawler in the photo and didn't get the entire obstacle in most of the pics, but I still thought they were pretty cool.

What I call "Stage 1". Our ace photo bug didn't bother to get the truck in the shot. It's just past that ridge about halfway between Dumb & Dumber there.

Immediately after that climb, there's a transition of sorts between "Stage 1" and "Stage 2":

Then finally, "Stage 2". A screw-up anywhere along here results in a ride on the express elevator straight down at least 20 feet to a gravel road.

This next one was just kinda cool I thought. I call it "An R/C Nerd and His Toy."
