Default Need gear help

Well I recently built a Goliath Rock Crawler kit, my first RC build, and it went pretty well. Only thing I was leary of was whether or not I set the drive gear lash correctly. I used a piece of paper like the directions said and it seemed to turn the main spur gear w/o ripping. Of course when I started running the truck I quickly realized I had messed up and now my 84 tooth spur gear is useless, pretty much stripped out. My question is, where can I get a replacement spur gear, will any 84 tooth gear be compatible or do I need to contact PTI? Secondly and advice on how to properly set the gear to avoid future mishaps would be great. Thanks for the help, and I did try to search but did not find this particular answer.

The PTI gear have 48 pitch (P) as far as I know, so there should be choices available almost at any hobbyshop selling rc-stuff.

I use the same way to adjust the lash, but I use 2 paper pieces. Has worked fine. You can hear the gears when they are too tight. And the car often doesn't move as well when the gears are too tight.

If you get a new spur, go bigger! With a little work on the skid plate you can fit a 87T or a 90T in there. Maybe even a 93T? I had a 87x12 in mine.

Thanks for the help, I am going to take a look at this today. I think I will try to get it running with the stock size, then upgrade at some point. It does seem like the truck is a bit fast for crawling, so I suppose a bigger gear to lower the reduction would be good. Thanks again, I appreciate the responses.

To really crawl, you're going to have to use some type of gear reduction unit. The RC4WD or GD unit.

I did go ahead and grab an 87 tooth spur gear as well as the 84, they were pretty cheap and I'd like to see the difference. I keep hearing about the gd unit, but when I search I don't find anything specific. What exactly is this? Does it replace something or is it an added piece?

Thanks for the link, seems like it would be pretty straight forward to install one. I think I'll work on setting the truck up properly with the new spur gear, then start looking into mods, but that will probably be the first as I know this truck is way too fast.
