I had a same issue with my FF12R body. The problem is design of a fenders on real Fiesta WRC. They are with 90 deg creases and also narrower than full body width so when you hit front end, the rotating wheel will gradually destroying small areas in front of front wheels. It is a Tax for scale realism look. FF14 body seems to be more durable on this spot.

Turtle, Great thread and thanks for all the info. I'd really like to pickup this kit as a dirt track just opened up down the street from my place. How is the XV01 on jumps? Think it could handle these on this youtube video of the track?

The car jumps pretty well for a 10th scale sedan, its by no means as agile in the area as a short course truck, but if you pick your line carefully before the lip of the jump and control your throttle well enough in the air it should be fine. There will definitely be some trial and error trying to master a track like that with a 10th scale car, but I have no doubt it will be able to do it. But also because of the larger jumps and bumpy loose track long travel suspension and tuning the diffs will be of the highest priorities.

Rally Season here in Colorado is about to start. With that it's time to go through the car and anything I can improve upon.

Since I have owned ever upgrade for the XV01 since its release two years ago. I decided to jump on the long travel shock towers and see if there is a difference.



First a comparison with the stock rear and the long travel.

Right out of the gate there is a pretty substantial difference in size.

And here it is in place. The shock on the left is the shocks I have been running for the last two-ish years, and on the right is a longer shock with a full length Losi Black spring.

This setup offers more up travel then my previous setup and the same amount of down travel, but the use of a full length spring and tuning options for shock placement is a nice advantage with the long travel tower.

Next the front tower compared to the long travel tower.

It may not look like much, but this is a very substiancal difference.

Here it is in place, These are the shocks I used previously in the front, sitting fully drooped out. In the position with the original shock tower the shocks were attached.


I took my old 3.5" (ish) shocks that were on the rear and put them in the front using full length Losi black springs (1.2lb).

This entire setup is a bit stiffer then my old setup and increased my ride height a little too. We have a BBQ rally this sunday, I should be able to put this through its paces and see what I make of it.

The increased ride height is pretty noticeable here. Even with the rear lowered to counter act the higher mounting position of the rear body posts. For the front Tamiya was very smart, the holes through the carbon long travel towers are a functional item, allowing the body posts to go through them.


More parts should be showing up in the next week or so. Stay tuned because this is literally being 100% rebuilt before the start of the 2015 CRC season in October.

Looks good, so was there a longer shock to go with the towers? I've not looked at the long travel kit much, but it looks like a good upgrade.

Not that I am aware of. I am not 100% sure, but I think the long travel just uses longer rod ends. For my car I make it up as I go.

Ok, so rebuild time!

First I grabbed a couple new bodies for my 2wd XV01.

Castrol Honda Civic




Alright the rebuild, The XV01 was dirty!


I pulled the chassis protector.


Then I stripped the chassis down.


And even my aluminum pulleys were showing some wear.




And the new chassis.


First thing I did with the chassis is file down and angle the area the steering goes by.


Next is the chassis protector


I roughed up the chassis first with a wire brush, I put this on then went around the chassis with an exact knife. On the edges I put some CA glue to help hold it in place.




After the chassis was set up I moved onto the diffs. Slop seems to develop in the outputs over time, so I went with some new differentials.


I know, I know metal gears, it adds rotating mass. I know I have been against these in the past and I still am to a degree. But I am hoping these will run smoother longer and hold up without showing wear. I am also hoping these will resist the wallowing that occurs over time.

I normally run 10k oil in the front diff, I decided to change things up and see how 15k feels.


After the front differential I moved onto the spur gear. It wasn't stripped, but was definitely showing some wear from the last two years of driving.


It took me a while to find these and I have yet to find any different teeth counts, but here is the XV01 slipper spur.


And the 23 tooth pinion gear I have been running, I might be able to run a 22T, so I ordered a 22, and 23 to replace this one that is showing some wear and has a broken tooth.


New spur gear on!


And pulleys. My existing aluminum pulleys were showing some wear, this over time can cause the belt to slip or wear prematurely, so I ordered two new ones and on they went.

Tool of the trade, it's for bikes but works pretty well for cleaning the RCs.


Front all back together, bearings cleaned and lubed, diffs rebuilt and everything checked for excessive wear.

I'll come back to the rest of the rebuild soon. But for now... Today was the first race of the 2015 Colorado Rally Championship. And it was fantastic!

We changed the racing format and where we would only get 5 or so races per class per event last season we now have it so everyone races ever single driver before going into a single elimination bracket, so just today I got 13 races in our Group B (open 4wd) class. So amazing getting that much time racing head to head. This season everyone in the class should be getting at least 100 races over for the season and just in one class! And amazingly enough I only used 3 batteries.

My XV01 ran perfect and I grabbed a couple photos some of the guys posted on Facebook. Oh yeah and new body for the season.















Really fun track we built in an hour before the race today.


9 more races still left in the season!

Oh and BVRC (Kirt) got Freq E to make use some decals for everyone to run this season, so hopefully by the next race everyone will have these on their cars.

If anyone is interested in the Ford Escort rally body there is a company on ebay by the name of Team Blue Groove which makes the body. The body does not come with the rear wing and no masking or stickers. I don't know the quality of the body either but from the pictures it looks the same as the old tamiya body. I am hoping to order the body next month to see the quality of it.

Team Blue Groove actually takes original bodies (from Tamiya, etc.) and uses them to make re-pops. I think most of the bodies they sell are bodies that have been discontinued from popular companies.

I believe I purchased a rally driver cockpit from them before, I think it was a little thin, but am having a hard time 100% remembering.

Ty, great car you have there ! I'm reading this thread as my main source to get know better the kit, but are you happy with those gpm parts ? I had Hpi Cup racer and upgraded a arms, knuckles etc and there was a huge amount of play in suspension overall, finally I've dumped it, hows in your case ?

I haven't had any issues with the GPM parts I have on this car. In fact besides looking cleaner I would say they are better parts then stock, especially when it comes to the rear hub carriers.
